Global telecast details for The Blue Brand

WWE SmackDown debuted on April 29, 1999, at the Kemper Arena in Kansas City, Missouri, airing on UPN on Thursday nights. Over the years, the show has evolved, switching networks and time slots multiple times to grow its audience.

In September 2005, SmackDown moved to Friday nights, and by September 2006, it found a new home on The CW after UPN and WB merged. In October 2008, the show transitioned to MyNetworkTV, before shifting to cable network Syfy in October 2010. SmackDown eventually returned to Thursdays on January 15, 2015. Just a year later, on January 7, 2016, it joined the USA Network lineup and started broadcasting live on Tuesday nights from July 19, 2016.

The show’s move to Fox on October 4, 2019, marked its return to Friday nights and over-the-air broadcasting. Then, on September 13, 2024, SmackDown made its way back to USA Network, marking yet another exciting chapter in its history.

SmackDown has been broadcast from over 100 arenas in more than 100 cities across nine countries, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Japan (2005), Italy (2007), Mexico (2011), France, Saudi Arabia, and Germany (2024). Before its live format, taped episodes would sometimes air earlier internationally due to time zone differences.

The show celebrated major milestones, including its 15th anniversary on October 10, 2014, and its 1000th episode on October 16, 2018.

With the WWE Network’s U.S. operations transitioning to Peacock on April 4, 2021, all past SmackDown episodes are now available there, while recent episodes become available 30 days after airing. Globally, Netflix will begin streaming SmackDown starting January 10, 2025, following its acquisition of WWE programming rights outside the U.S.

As part of its new $1.4 billion deal with NBCUniversal, SmackDown will expand to a three-hour format starting January 3, 2025. This deal also includes four primetime specials annually on NBC, reviving Saturday Night’s Main Event, which debuted its second iteration on December 14, 2024.

With its new three-hour format, a global Netflix debut, and a fresh partnership with NBCUniversal, SmackDown continues to prove why it remains a cornerstone of WWE entertainment. Fans can look forward to even more thrilling matches and unforgettable moments in the years ahead!
