New reports suggest WWE is exploring a major AAA crossover, but one rumored opponent may already be off the table
Roman Reigns’ teased connection with AAA has sparked widespread speculation about who could challenge the World Heavyweight Champion when WWE heads to Mexico next month.
The closing moments of the August 3 episode of Monday Night Raw saw Reigns sharing a backstage interaction with AAA General Manager Rey Mysterio, hinting that The Tribal Chief could soon make an appearance in the Mexican promotion. While WWE has yet to reveal its plans, new reports have already narrowed down one possibility.
Who will Roman Reigns face?
According to Bryan Alvarez on Wrestling Observer Live, WWE has ruled out one of the names that had been heavily discussed by fans.
“WWE is claiming that it is not going to be Roman Reigns and El Grande [Americano]” fighting for the World Heavyweight Championship on Raw in Mexico City.
Dave Meltzer added that WWE’s mindset is that whichever Mexican star loses to Reigns would effectively be receiving a major career boost simply by sharing the ring with the company’s biggest attraction.
El Grande Americano still seen as the dream opponent
Although recent reports suggest the match is not currently planned, many believe El Grande Americano remains the most compelling opponent if WWE fully commits to the AAA partnership.
Americano has become one of AAA’s biggest attractions and enjoys tremendous support from Mexican fans. A championship match against Roman Reigns would instantly become one of the promotion’s biggest attractions and could easily headline a stadium event in Mexico.
The matchup also feels unique because, despite both performers now operating under the WWE umbrella, they have been presented almost as stars from different worlds.
Following Ludwig Kaiser’s portrayal of El Grande Americano after Chad Gable’s original version of the character, the gimmick has largely been absent from WWE television, making appearances in AAA feel even more significant.
Roman Reigns’ AAA run could create several blockbuster rivalries
Whether or not Americano becomes Reigns’ first opponent, WWE has several intriguing options if it intends to make Roman’s AAA appearances more than a one-off attraction.
A competitive championship match with Americano would elevate the AAA star regardless of the result. WWE could even stage a rematch in the United States after an initial encounter in Mexico, creating greater unpredictability while exposing Americano to a broader audience.
