The championship was introduced during the WWF days

WWE has a total of 18 championships divided across its three brands, NXT, RAW, and SmackDown. One of these prestigious championships is the Intercontinental Championship.

The title was introduced on September 1, 1979, back in the WWF days. The title is defended on the Monday Night RAW division of the brand. Jey Uso is the current Intercontinental champion of the WWE. He won the title by defeating Bron Breakker recently.

The Intercontinental Title is the third-oldest championship currently active in WWE after the WWE Championship and the WWE United States Championship.

Since its inception, there have been a total of 86 reigns among 91 different champions. Among these champions, Chris Jericho has the most IC title reigns with nine. However, to this date there only has been one female wrestler who has won the championship.

25 years ago today Chyna became the only woman to hold the IC title

“The Ninth Wonder of the World” Chyna made her WWE debut on February 16, 1997, and quickly rose to prominence in the promotion. She was involved in many major storylines during her time.

She was one of the founding members of the D-Generation X. A tag team that consisted of Triple H, Shawn Michaels, X-Pac, the New Age Outlaw, and Chyna. Chyna was the enforcer for the D-Generation X crew.

On October 17, 1999, Chyna defeated Jeff Jarrett at No Mercy and became the only woman to hold the Intercontinental Championship. She also became the first woman to qualify for the King of the Ring tournament in June of the same year.

To this date, no other female wrestler has even come close to capturing the Intercontinental title besides the enforcer of the D-Generation X. Chyna left the promotion on November 30, 2001, amid many speculations.

At the age of 46, Chyna was found dead at her home in Redondo Beach, California on April 20, 2016. She left a huge and long-lasting legacy that inspires a lot of upcoming wrestlers to this day.
