The 17-time WWE World Champion John Cena hung up his wrestling boots following his loss to Gunther at the December 2025 edition of Saturday Night’s Main Event. For the first time since his retirement, Cena made his return last month in Las Vegas.
Cena returned for the first time since December 2025 to host the 42nd edition of WrestleMania on April 18 and 19 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. While Cena did not wrestle, staying true to his decision to retire, he did participate in a segment involving Danhausen, The Miz, and Kit Wilson.
Now WWE is gearing up to deliver the first PLE after Mania, which is the Backlash PLE, and after a tweet by Cena, fans are wondering if he will appear at Backlash in Tampa.
Will John Cena appear at Backlash 2026?
Yes, John Cena will make an appearance at WWE Backlash 2026. Responding to a birthday tweet, Cena reflected that if it were still 2023, his circumstances with WWE might have been different, especially around WWE Backlash. However, he teased doing something “epic” in Tampa on May 9 and revealed that he has promised something special to Club WWE.
Backlash is scheduled for May 9 at the Benchmark International Arena in Tampa, Florida, and now the Benchmark Arena on their website has confirmed Cena’s appearance at the arena this Saturday.
Although it is not clear if Cena will only appear to promote Club WWE or might partake in segments or matches, his appearance is guaranteed to generate some buzz for WWE.
