Money in the Bank ladder matches carry huge anticipation & have a separate fanbase
Money in the Bank is a multi-starred wrestling match that was introduced in 2005 by Chris Jericho. The match is based on the multi-starred ladder match concept, where a briefcase with a championship contract is hung on the top of the ring and multiple wrestlers battle among themselves to climb the ladder and grab the MITB briefcase.
The winner who grabs the MITB briefcase gains an opportunity to challenge for any championship of the company, anywhere unless a referee is around. So far WWE has witnessed 30 Money in the Bank matches (both Men’s and Women’s). Here we take a look at the top 5 worst MITB ladder matches.
5. Raw MITB 2011
The 2011 Raw Money in the Bank featured eight WWE Superstars from the Raw brand including Alberto Del Rio, Rey Mysterio, Alex Riley, Evan Bourne, Jack Swagger, Kofi Kingston, The Miz and R-Truth. The match was held exclusively for the Raw brand for a future WWE Championship opportunity.
The match witnessed Evan Bourne’s high-flying action, Miz being taken out for medical attention and Rey Mysterio getting unmasked by Del Rio. Alberto Del Rio won the match after a 15-minute brawl by unhooking the briefcase. Alberto Del Rio winning the briefcase upset several WWE fans. He teased of cashing in the same night on Punk, but Punk escaped from the ringside.
4. Raw MITB 2013
The 2013 Raw Money in the Bank ladder match was held for a future World Heavyweight Championship. This is a namesake match featuring some jobbers and mid-card wrestlers including Damien Sandow, Antonio Cesaro, Cody Rhodes, Dean Ambrose, Fandango, Jack Swagger and Wade Barrett. Damien Sandow won the match by betraying his partner Cody Rhodes. The match had no interest, as the SmackDown MITB match was filled with major stars, which shadowed this match.
3. MITB 2015
The 2015 Money in the Bank ladder match for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship contract featured some of the bigger stars including Sheamus, Roman Reigns, Randy Orton, Dolph Ziggler, Kane, Neville and Kofi Kingston. Roman Reigns was the favorite to win the MITB briefcase, as the main event was between Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. However Wyatt Family took Reigns out, which made Sheamus win the MITB briefcase.
2. Women’s MITB 2019
The 2019 Women’s Money in the Bank ladder match featured Bayley, Carmella, Dana Brooke, Ember Moon, Mandy Rose, Naomi, Natalya and Nikki Cross. The match was booked loose, by booking more inexperienced wrestlers in the ladder match. Bayley won the match too quickly with just 13 minutes and went on to cash in the same day by cashing in on Charlotte Flair for the WWE SmackDown Women’s Championship.
1. Women’s MITB 2017
The 2017 Women’s Money in the Bank ladder match is the inaugural MITB ladder match to the women’s roster, however, it was a big botched match. The match featured Carmella, Becky Lynch, Charlotte Flair, Natalya and Tamina. Carmella won the match in a controversial way, where James Ellsworth unhooked the briefcase and gave it to Mella. Daniel Bryan declined her win and announced another ladder match on SmackDown in which Carmella again won.
