Five worst storylines heading into WWE SummerSlam 2026

SummerSlam 2026 doesn’t have the best of storylines this year.
WWE will be heading to Minneapolis, Minnesota, at the US Bank Stadium for their upcoming Premium Live Event, SummerSlam 2026. It is set to be a two-night event and feature some of the biggest names in professional wrestling.
However, the road to SummerSlam featured storylines that may not have captivated the audience enough. Here are five of those worst storylines heading into WWE SummerSlam this year:
5. Trick Williams vs Baron Corbin
It seemed that Trick Williams was going to have a top storyline with his longtime ally and foe, Carmelo Hayes, heading into SummerSlam.
However, the sudden return of Baron Corbin led to those plans being scrapped in favor of a lackluster storyline that has not generated much buzz.

4. Sami Zayn vs Finn Balor
Sami Zayn tried every ounce of his power to get back into the Undisputed WWE Title picture after losing the belt in nine days.
Despite that, Zayn was left out and placed in a random match against Finn Balor. Although it will be high-stakes, it is still not a very compelling storyline heading into SummerSlam 2026.
3. Women’s Ladder match
Rhea Ripley‘s unfortunate knee injury reportedly led WWE to scrap other plans for the women’s matches at SummerSlam 2026.
Instead of a rumored Charlotte Flair vs Jade Cargill bout or Tiffany Stratton’s hometown moment, they planned a multi-woman ladder match to crown an interim Women’s Champion, which has failed to garner attention.
2. Penta vs Chad Gable
Penta and Chad Gable could have been one of the top programs for SummerSlam 2026, with their previous battles and Gable possibly winning the Intercontinental title in his hometown.
However, the buildup has been lackluster, with them throwing no punches and instead being portrayed as allies before they clash at SummerSlam.
1. Cody Rhodes vs CM Punk
One of the most disappointing storylines to fail to garner interest was the main event match for the Undisputed WWE title between Cody Rhodes and CM Punk.
Despite two of the biggest stars facing off, fans have panned WWE’s booking of the program and seem to have little interest in the SummerSlam storyline.

The 39th edition will air as a two-night spectacle on Saturday, August 1, and Sunday, August 2, 2026, at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Fans can catch all the action from 6 PM ET/3 PM PT (or 3:30 AM IST on Sunday, August 2, and Monday, August 3, respectively) on Netflix internationally (excluding select markets) and on the ESPN App in the United States.
