Roman Reigns retained the WWE Men’s World Championship after enduring one of the toughest battles of his career.
Roman Reigns and Jacob Fatu collided in a violent main-event showdown at WWE Backlash 2026, delivering a physical and emotionally charged battle worthy of the Bloodline legacy.
The early moments immediately established the tone. Reigns attempted to overpower Fatu with traditional offense, but the challenger refused to stay down. After shrugging off shoulder blocks, Fatu stunned the champion with a massive lariat and followed it up with a devastating Tongan Death Grip on the outside.
Fatu then smashed Reigns into the ring post, signaling that the Samoan Werewolf had arrived with bad intentions.
Jacob Fatu pushes the champion to the limit
Reigns attempted to neutralize Fatu by targeting his taped fingers and arm, wrenching the limb against the ropes and corner turnbuckles. The champion briefly slowed the challenger down, but Fatu repeatedly fought through the pain with headbutts, elbows, and explosive power offense.
Momentum shifted wildly throughout the contest.
Reigns connected with a Superman Punch early, but Fatu shockingly kicked out at one, leaving the champion visibly stunned. Moments later, Jacob responded with sentons, Odes to Rikishi, and another brutal Tongan Death Grip.
One of the match’s biggest moments came when Fatu powerbombed Reigns through the announce desk after countering the Drive-By attempt on the outside.
Despite the destruction, Reigns answered with a spear back inside the ring, but even that failed to keep Fatu down.
Chaos erupts late in the match
As the crowd loudly chanted “OTC,” both men entered a desperate closing stretch filled with dramatic counters and near falls.
Fatu countered another spear attempt with a Samoan Drop before connecting with a moonsault, yet Reigns somehow survived. The challenger later trapped the champion in another Tongan Death Grip, leaving Reigns gasping for air and nearly fading out completely.
In the chaos, referee Shaun Bennett was accidentally knocked into the corner during a struggle. Reigns used the confusion to his advantage, sending Fatu into the exposed turnbuckle to finally break the submission hold.
Roman Reigns retains at WWE Backlash
With both men exhausted and battered, Reigns dug deep one final time. The champion exploded off the ropes and delivered a decisive spear to pin Jacob Fatu and retain the WWE Men’s World Championship.
Although Reigns walked away victorious, Fatu proved he belongs in WWE’s elite tier after pushing the Tribal Chief further than almost anyone in recent memory.
Winner: Roman Reigns
Fatu attacks Roman after the match
Just when Roman Reigns appeared to have survived the brutal Bloodline war at WWE Backlash 2026, Jacob Fatu launched a vicious post-match assault, refusing to let the rivalry end.
A battered Reigns was blindsided as Fatu unleashed a savage attack, sending a clear message that their war is far from over and potentially setting the stage for the next explosive chapter in the Bloodline saga.
“That’s why we should never have let Jacob into this company. You don’t belong here, Jacob, there’s no order with you. This was your last night here.” said Roman after the match to Fatu.
