Undisputed WWE Champion CM Punk has opened up about one of the most emotional moments of his personal life, revealing that proposing to his wife, AJ Lee, remains the scariest experience he has ever faced.
The beloved WWE couple recently celebrated 12 years of marriage after quietly tying the knot on June 13, 2014. While Punk has competed in some of the biggest professional wrestling and mixed martial arts events in the world, he admitted none of them compared to the nerves he felt before asking AJ Lee to marry him.
Speaking on Stephanie McMahon’s What’s Your Story? podcast, Punk reflected on the proposal and explained why that moment outweighed anything he experienced inside the ring or the Octagon.

CM Punk admitted that many people questioned his decision to compete in the UFC, but insisted they misunderstood what truly frightened him.
“You think for a second I give a f** what somebody says about me stepping into a cage when the scariest moment of my life was buying a ring and not knowing?”
The WWE Champion explained that uncertainty—not physical danger—was what terrified him.
At the time, Punk said he had only been dating AJ Lee for around six months and knew very little about engagement rings or even whether she wanted to get married.
“I don’t know about jewelry. Does she like jewelry? I knew I had to ask her this question. What if she says no? When I got the bright idea that I was going to ask her to marry me, I think we had only truly, literally been dating for six months.”
Despite all the doubts racing through his mind, Punk knew he wanted to take the next step in their relationship.

Punk also shared how he carefully planned the proposal, writing the life-changing question inside a card before waiting for the perfect moment.
As AJ Lee opened the card, panic briefly set in.
“She snatched the card and opened it. While she turned around to read it, I was like, ‘Oh my God, get the ring out.’”
What followed remains one of the most cherished memories of his life.
“We both stood there with tears in our eyes for what felt like five minutes. I think I said, ‘Do I get down on my knee?’ She was like, ‘Yep.’ I got down on my knee, and I said, ‘Will you marry me?’ She said yes.”
CM Punk and AJ Lee first crossed paths in WWE in 2012 after being paired together in an on-screen storyline that also involved Daniel Bryan, creating one of WWE’s memorable love triangle angles.
At the time, Punk was the reigning WWE Champion while AJ Lee had quickly established herself as one of the defining stars of WWE’s women’s division.
Their on-screen chemistry eventually developed into a real-life relationship. The pair officially began dating in 2013 before marrying the following year after Punk’s departure from WWE. AJ Lee retired from in-ring competition in 2015 and has remained away from WWE ever since, although both continue to be among the most beloved couples in professional wrestling.
