The American Nightmare overcame Gunther’s relentless attack and escaped the Gojira Clutch to keep hold of the Undisputed WWE Championship in Italy.
Cody Rhodes walked into WWE Clash in Italy carrying the weight of the Undisputed WWE Championship, and he walked out still holding the gold after surviving a brutal battle against Gunther.
In a clash between two of WWE’s biggest stars, Rhodes dug deep to overcome the relentless challenge of “The Ring General” and retain his championship in front of a raucous Italian crowd.
From the opening bell, the atmosphere was electric as both men received strong support. Gunther immediately asserted his dominance, controlling the early exchanges with a wristlock and forcing Rhodes to the mat during a test of strength.

Gunther dominates early as Rhodes absorbs punishment

Even a diving splash could not finish Rhodes, who managed to get his knees up at the last second before connecting with the Beautiful Disaster and a Cross Rhodes for a near fall.
Despite the champion’s comeback efforts, Gunther remained firmly in control whenever he found an opening. His ability to slow the pace and inflict punishment repeatedly pushed Rhodes to the brink of defeat.
Cody Rhodes survives the Gojira Clutch and finds a way
The turning point came when Gunther locked in the dreaded Gojira Clutch. The challenger transitioned through multiple variations of the hold, rolling Rhodes across the mat and using his full body weight to wear down the champion.
At one point, Rhodes appeared moments away from passing out as referee Dan Engler closely monitored the situation.
Gunther relentlessly reapplied the hold, grinding Rhodes’ face into the mat while keeping him trapped in the center of the ring. The champion somehow stayed alive, finally reaching the ropes with his foot to force a break and keep the match going.
What followed was a dramatic exchange of lariats, with both men refusing to back down. Gunther nearly turned the tide again with a crushing clothesline, but Rhodes found an opening.
After evading danger and surviving another assault, the champion connected with a perfectly timed Cody Cutter.
Sensing his moment, Rhodes followed up with a thunderous Cross Rhodes. Adjusting his cover mid-pin to secure maximum leverage, the champion finally kept Gunther’s shoulders down for the decisive three-count.
With the victory, Cody Rhodes retained the Undisputed WWE Championship and added another memorable title defense to his growing legacy. While Gunther pushed him to his absolute limit, the American Nightmare once again proved why he remains the face of WWE’s main-event scene.
