CM Punk revisits the iconic pipe bomb promo from 2011.
In a recent appearance on ALL THE SMOKE Unplugged ahead of WrestleMania 42, WWE World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk revisited his iconic pipe bomb promo from 2011 and opened up about how the promo came together.
Punk revealed that the promo wasn’t planned and came together at the last minute, adding that if he had outlined his ideas beforehand, it likely would have been cut by Vince McMahon.
“I did not dwell on it. I did not have days or weeks to think about it. I literally walked out there, I was out the door mentally. I was so checked out. And then for him [Vince McMahon] to say, ‘I want you to air your grievances,’ and for me to just go, ‘No, you don’t, you don’t want that.’
Because I know if I wrote that all down or explained what I was going to say, he’d be like, ‘No, you can’t say that. You can’t mention Paul backstage.’ If you mentioned Paul Heyman in a conversation, he would spit on the ground, he did not want you mentioning it. It didn’t make any sense to him.”
In the legendary promo during a Raw edition on June 27, 2011, Punk aired his grievances, blurring the lines between reality and kayfabe. That said, Punk, during the conversation, also noted that he didn’t say anything that was already referenced on WWE Television, but added that a few subtle additions that helped blur the line between reality and storyline.
“But I didn’t say anything in that promo that wasn’t something that was already highlighted on our television show, except for maybe dropping a New Japan/Ring of Honor reference.
But my fans knew what I was talking about, and that was just enough peek behind the curtain to get people to go, ‘What is he talking about? Oh wait, he’s not supposed to say this.’”
CM Punk reached out to Triple H after the latter’s heart issue

The World Heavyweight Champion also recalled reaching out to Triple H following his heart issues and how it led to his eventual WWE return. Triple H suffered a near-fatal cardiac event in September 2021.
Punk revealed that he reached out to Triple H after witnessing Hulk Hogan and the Ultimate Warrior bury their beef, days before Warrior passed away, and how it made him realize that the resentment wasn’t worth it.
He also revealed how the call led to his eventual WWE return, after getting a call from WWE President Nick Khan asking him to come back. Punk made his surprising return at the 2023 Survivor Series in Chicago.
“It was because after a while I reached out to Triple H and I knew he had this heart condition thing, and I had seen a clip of Hogan and the Warrior, and everything we do is filmed, what’s real, what’s not, and it’s Hogan, so you don’t know what’s the truth, but they’re having this conversation and kind of apologising and forgiving each other, then a couple of days later the Ultimate Warrior dies.
It just made me realise this s**t ain’t worth it, and I don’t care, and I get a call from Nick (Khan) like ‘hey, we want you to come back’. Oh. Interesting. What does that look like? Is the place different? It’s so wildly different, and if it wasn’t I wouldn’t be here.”
