Vince McMahon could be the person behind Randy Orton’s mysterious phone calls, says HOF
The road to WrestleMania 42 just got a whole lot more intriguing. WWE Hall of Famer Tommy Dreamer has revealed on Busted Open After Dark that he now believes Vince McMahon could be the mystery caller who has been guiding Randy Orton throughout his ongoing storyline with Cody Rhodes, following a specific moment on Monday’s Raw at Madison Square Garden that changed his entire read on the angle.
The MSG promo that changed everything
Dreamer broke down Stephanie McMahon’s confrontation with Cody Rhodes at MSG and pinpointed two specific lines that triggered his theory shift. References to MSG as “the house my grandfather built” and Michael Cole calling it “the house that Bruno built” immediately made Dreamer think of Vince McMahon’s central role in building WWE’s legacy at the Garden. He was direct about where his mind went.
Dreamer said Stephanie’s closing shot at Cody, that “you’re not your father either,” was the line that pushed his speculation into overdrive.
He had previously been convinced The Rock was the person on the phone with Randy Orton, pointing to lines like “of course you were watching” and “yes, there’s only one royal family” as his basis. After Monday’s Raw, he admitted he is leaning in a completely different direction.

What a Vince McMahon return could mean at WrestleMania 42?

On the potential reaction a Vince McMahon return could produce at WrestleMania, Dreamer was unequivocal. He believes the former WWE Chairman would receive an enormous response regardless of what side he chose.
If McMahon helps Randy Orton win, Dreamer expects the crowd to cheer. If he sides with Cody Rhodes, Dreamer thinks the boos would not be traditional heel heat but rather a crowd reacting to the unexpected.
Dreamer also made a bold prediction about what an Orton title win could mean for the industry. He called a Randy Orton victory with the RKO one of the potential biggest pops in WWE history, and said the bigger story would be what comes after.
Could this be WWE laying the groundwork for an actual Vince McMahon return?
Dreamer did acknowledge he could be wrong entirely, noting that WWE may simply be dropping breadcrumbs to ignite online conversation rather than laying the groundwork for an actual Vince McMahon return.
He credited the Stephanie segment for achieving exactly what WWE intended, adding that it shifted his personal investment from the Roman Reigns vs CM Punk match to Cody Rhodes vs Randy Orton as his most anticipated bout of WrestleMania 42.
Rhodes defends the Undisputed WWE Championship against Randy Orton in the Night 1 main event of WrestleMania 42 on April 18 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
Who does Tommy Dreamer think is the mystery caller on the phone with Randy Orton?
Tommy Dreamer initially believed The Rock was the person on the phone with Randy Orton during his Raw segments, citing lines like “of course you were watching” and references to a “royal family.” However, after Stephanie McMahon’s promo at Madison Square Garden on the March 31 episode of Raw, Dreamer shifted his thinking and now believes Vince McMahon could be the mystery caller behind the Orton storyline.
