The former Divas champion was last seen in WWE in March 2015
AJ Mendez better known among pro wrestling fans as AJ Lee has been speculated to return to the WWE ever since her husband and WWE star CM Punk made a return to the company at the 2023 Survivor Series.
AJ Lee announced her retirement back in 2015 due to her cervical spine injury. Lee signed with the WWE in 2009 and was promoted to the main roster in 2012 after she spent two years in its developmental branch.
She quickly rose to prominence in the promotion and was involved in many major storylines during that time. Lee has also won the Divas Championship a record-tying three times. She is tied with retired WWE star Eve Torres.
Lee also had the longest combined reign as Divas Champion at 406 days while Nikki Bella had the longest individual title reign at 301 days. In October 2021 after spending six years away from the pro-wrestling world, the former Divas Champion joined the Women of Wrestling (WOW) promotion as an executive producer.

As per recent reports via Wrestlevotes Q & A – Backstage Pass, the promotion is currently on board with the idea of welcoming the former Divas Champion AJ Lee back into the WWE.
Reports suggest that it is up to Lee to decide whether she wants to come back to the WWE or wants to enjoy her retirement from wrestling.
“As far as I know, WWE is totally on board for it. They would welcome it. She picks up the phone and she says, ‘I’m in’, they’re going to say, ‘Yes, what took so long?”
Mendez also works as a writer and has written her memoir, ‘Crazy Is My Superpower: How I Triumphed by Breaking Bones, Breaking Hearts, and Breaking the Rules’, the memoir was published by Crown Archetype in 2017.
Lee’s husband CM Punk also addressed the situation during a post-show press meet of Money in the Bank 2024 expressing his desire to see Lee back in action and has emphasized that the decision is entirely hers, as he does not want to pressure her into a comeback.
“I don’t want to fall in the trap of saying ‘never say never’. I don’t wanna give people false hope. I also will not put words in her mouth and say, ‘I think this could happen’. “I think this is a brave new world and I don’t think a lot of people thought I was gonna show up. It’s really all on her.” Punk stated.
Lee has stated earlier that she currently has no plans for a return to the WWE ring. She is currently writing her own comic book series, Day of the Dead Girl. The first issue of the book was released on October 9, 2024.
