A tournament will decide Roman Reigns’ title challenger for Raw in Mexico City.
Since the announcement of Roman Reigns defending the World Heavyweight Championship on the September 14 edition of Raw in Mexico City, fans have been speculating if El Grande Americano is going to be the one to challenge Reigns.
WWE recently revealed the tournament bracket to determine Reigns’ title challenger, and Americano is not part of the tournament. On that, we now have a new update from WON’s Dave Meltzer.
Dave Meltzer, in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, stated that rumors of Americano facing Reigns are unfounded. He also noted that El Grande Americano was absent from the tournament’s promotional material, which instead featured Penta, La Parka, El Fiscal, El Hijo del Dr. Wagner Jr., Dragon Lee, Fenix, Psycho Clown, and Laredo Kid.
Meltzer pointed out that Penta is the only participant who has been established at a level where a World title match against Roman Reigns would feel credible. With Penta recently dropping the Intercontinental title ot Chad Gable at SummerSlam, WWE could logically move him into the World Championship picture.
By comparison, a match involving someone like El Fiscal, who is not yet well-known among WWE fans, appears less likely. Additionally, with Reigns seemingly overlooking Rey Mysterio as AAA’s General Manager, the tournament does not appear to offer much benefit to AAA. This could make a WWE-affiliated contender such as Penta a more logical choice to win the tournament.
The winner of the aforementioned tournament will face Reigns for the World title on the September 14 edition of Raw, which will emanate from the Arena CDMX in Mexico City, Mexico.
