CM Punk & John Cena are currently part of very different storylines
Despite fan speculation and recent social media teasing, WWE is reportedly not planning to book a blockbuster clash between CM Punk and John Cena at the upcoming Money in the Bank Premium Live Event on June 7.
According to a report from PWInsider Elite, multiple sources within WWE’s creative team have confirmed that the match is not part of the short-term plans. However, the company does hope to eventually deliver the long-awaited showdown as part of Cena’s retirement tour “when the time is right”.
Over the weekend, CM Punk stirred excitement among fans by posting a screenshot of John Cena to his Instagram Story following Cena’s successful Undisputed WWE Championship defense against Randy Orton at Backlash.
CM Punk added a cheeky caption to the post that simply said, “For now,” hinting that John Cena’s reign might be short-lived. The tease immediately sparked fan buzz about a potential rematch between the two legends.
Their most iconic encounter took place at the 2011 Money in the Bank event, where Punk defeated Cena to win the WWE Championship and left the company (kayfabe) with the title in hand.
The moment remains one of the most memorable in WWE history, and fans have long hoped to see them clash one more time under the bright lights.
But for now, WWE seems to be focusing on other creative directions. While Cena is heavily featured on the company’s current programming, a source within the company told PWInsider Elite that plans are shifting toward a different kind of match at Money in the Bank.
Specifically, there have been discussions about involving rapper Travis Scott in a match alongside Cena. Scott, who played a pivotal role in Cena’s heel turn at Elimination Chamber earlier this year, has reportedly been training with Booker T at his wrestling school in Texas to prepare for an in-ring debut.
Creative pitches include Cena and Scott teaming up either in a traditional tag team match or a multi-man tag bout. Scott’s availability for the June 7 event has reportedly been confirmed, making this option more likely in the near term.
John Cena is currently advertised to appear at Saturday Night’s Main Event next weekend. Although no opponent has been officially announced, recent events suggest a possible confrontation with R-Truth, who interfered in Cena’s match at Backlash and was later put through a table during the post-show press conference. So while Cena vs Punk isn’t happening just yet, the door remains open for a showdown further down the road.
