After the attack by Gunther last week, Seth Rollins kicked off the broadcast in Houston. Meanwhile, World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk addressed fans. The show also featured appearances from both Brock Lesnar and Oba Femi.

Despite the announcement of Seth Rollins kicking off the broadcast, it was CM Punk who walked through the curtains to open the show. The World Heavyweight Champion sat down in the ring as “OTC” chants erupted. CM Punk began by stating that Houston is a wrestling town, referencing the great moments and the bad things that have happened in the arena.

Punk said he couldn’t help but compare himself to the old-timers and think about what they would have done. He told the fans that Roman Reigns wasn’t there that night, recalling how two weeks ago, with the help of his cousins, Reigns put him through the announce desk. Punk added that he got his revenge by showing up alone and putting Reigns through the announce desk.

Punk stated that it was good that Reigns hated him, as he wouldn’t trade his authenticity for approval. He said being hated by losers was the price he paid for not being one of them. As “OTC” chants broke out again, Punk told them to keep chanting, and maybe Reigns would show up, adding that he showed up despite being an ‘old man’, old, not weak.

“CM PUNK” chants followed as he explained why he hated Reigns. Punk got on the announce desk, pointing at the WrestleMania sign. He said both of them had the tools to climb to the top, but while his tools were self-belief and sacrifice, Reigns’ were store-bought and hand-delivered, calling him “plastic.”

Punk said he understood why TKO sent Reigns to Jimmy Fallon, calling him safe, boring, plastic, and manufactured, while he was dangerous and unpredictable. He questioned why he could film movies and shows and still show up, while fans booed Reigns just for saying he wouldn’t.

Punk mocked Reigns for puffing his chest out like The Rock, adding that at least he is a Hollywood star, then corrected himself, ‘WAS, a Hollywood superstar.’ The Champion said Reigns’ bloated cousin wasn’t on the board of directors and that his father didn’t get him a job. He brought up Reigns’ failed football career, calling him a “nepo baby” who ate dog food for a weird old man.

Punk added that Reigns hated him because he couldn’t control him like he controlled his cousins. He warned fans to be careful asking for a pipe bomb, because this was what they would get. Punk also mentioned Reigns failing after multiple main event opportunities. Punk said he stood on a bridge he could blow up because he knew how to swim.

He then turned to Pat ‘Magafee’ (McAfee), blasting him for coming into the business and talking about ticket prices. Punk said he could call his agent, who shoegorned him into the product, and ask him to get the ticket prices lowered, adding that he’d be damned if a football guy came in and talked about ticket prices.

Punk once again called for the ticket prices to be lowered so the fans could watch him kick Roman Reigns’ ass. He ended by saying his name was CM Punk, and he approved that message.

“Pat McAfee, you buggy whip armed, no brained hillbilly… You want to talk about ticket sales? Call up that agent shoehorned you into this product and this show and tell him to lower the ticket prices.”

Grade: A

Indights & Backstage Moments:

  • CM Punk once again revived the feud with a single scathing promo. Now, what will Reigns have to say next week?
  • Backstage, IShowSpeed begged Danhausen to lift the curse, but Danhausen refused. GM Adam Pearce then arrived, asking for Speed to leave and let the Usos and the Vision work it out. Logan and Theory then arrive, stating that with them, he is safe and then basically drag him with them for the walkout.

Austin Theory vs LA Knight

LA Knight and Austin Theory battled in singles action with Logan Paul and IShowSpeed ringside. Once again, Speed found himself running from Knight when, during a ringside sequence, Logan shoved Speed into Knight. The Usos then arrived to stop Speed from escaping, but Theory capitalized, rolling up Knight to secure the win.

After the match, Knight and the Usos confronted Speed, but Logan dragged him out of the ring to save him. Knight then called out GM Adam Pearce and floated the idea of a six-man tag match for WrestleMania, and Pearce made the match official.

Winner: Austin Theory

Grade: B

Match Insights & Backstage Moments:

  • This was the first time in three years that Theory and Knight have been in one-on-one competition, per Michael Cole.
  • The match could have ended in a DQ finish, instead of Knight taking the pinfall loss, as in the end, the goal was to just set up the match.

JD McDonagh vs Finn Balor

Dominik Mysterio ambushed Finn Balor during his entrance, but Balor fought back and sent JD McDonagh crashing into the ring post as JD tried to join the attack. Balor then sent Dirty Dom back into the ring, when McDonagh again attempted to interfere and was dumped to the outside.

Dominik capitalized on the momentary interference, blasting Balor with the AAA Mega Title. McDonagh handed him a steel chair, and Dominik began striking Balor with it before sitting on top of him and pointing toward the WrestleMania sign to end the beatdown.

Grade: B-

Insights & Backstage Moments:

  • The segment perfectly set up the return of the Demon as it gave Balor enough motivation to awaken the side that was missing.

AJ Lee & Becky Lynch

After a hype reel for AJ Lee, earlier footage aired of Michael Cole’s sit-down interview with her. Becky Lynch interrupted the segment. Lynch mocked Cole, who said he didn’t need this and walked off. Becky then sat down and asked AJ if she remembered being nervous when she saw an up-and-coming Becky, only to leave the next day.

Becky reminded AJ that she wouldn’t have a home-field advantage at WrestleMania. AJ responded that she was proud of herself and everything she had done for the business and the locker room, adding that none of it would have happened without her because she shattered those glass ceilings. She said she wasn’t replaceable and that the fans never forgot her.

AJ added that even Becky’s daughter’s favorite wrestler wasn’t Becky, but AJ Lee. She ended the segment by saying she would see Becky at WrestleMania. Afterward, Becky threw a tantrum and trashed the set.

Grade: B

Insights & Backstage Moments:

  • It is a travesty of how little time WWE has spent building up this match, which has almost become an afterthought.

Bayley vs Lash Legend

Ahead of the multi-team Women’s Tag Team match at WrestleMania, Bayley faced one-half of the Tag Team Champions, Lash Legend, with Nia Jax at ringside. Jax’s interference turned the match chaotic, as Lyra Valkyria attempted to take her down but failed. This brought out Alexa Bliss and Charlotte Flair, who attacked Jax at ringside.

Amid the chaos, Bayley countered Lash’s superplex attempt and pinned her for the win, with Lyra holding Lash down to secure the pin for her teammate.

Winner: Bayley

Grade: B-

Match Insights & Backstage Moments:

  • Leading into WrestleMania, the interference from Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss felt inevitable. Meanwhile, Michael Cole noted that Nikki Bella was still undergoing rehab, explaining the absence of The Bella Twins.
  • A promo for the Hulk Hogan documentary on Netflix aired during the show, which will premiere on April 22, featuring his very last interview.
  • Mark Henry was in attendance in Houston and got a huge pop from the live crowd.

Seth Rollins responds to the attack

(Courtesy: WWE.com)

Seth Rollins said he had been gone for six months and had been waiting for the fans to sing “the damn song.” Rollins announced that he was back before addressing his upcoming WrestleMania clash with Gunther. He said he had been trying to figure out how things got to this point, noting there was no personal issue between them.

However, after thinking it through over the past week, he concluded that Gunther had entered into some kind of business arrangement with Paul Heyman. The Visionary said he had two missions: first, to reclaim the World Heavyweight Championship, a title he never lost, and second, to “kill the Vision.”

Rollins mentioned others being tied up, referencing Logan and Theory dealing with the Samoans, and Bron Breakker and Bronson Reed being out, leaving Heyman with no one to defend him. He added that this was why Heyman had put Brock Lesnar on a silver platter for Oba Femi.

Rollins said Femi was undoubtedly the future, but warned that if Gunther intended to be Heyman’s shield, then it had become personal. Gunther suddenly appeared from behind and locked in a sleeper hold. Rollins escaped and applied a sleeper of his own, but Gunther broke free and exited the ring to avoid a stomp.

Rollins followed up with a kick and dove through the ropes as a brawl broke out. Adam Pearce and security rushed in to separate them. Gunther managed to sneak in a kick, dropping Rollins, before security escorted him backstage. Rollins returned to the ring and called him out, as the cameras cut backstage to Gunther running into Paul Heyman.

Heyman said he didn’t know why Gunther did what he did last week, adding that, in his mind, there was nothing personal between him and Rollins, but thanked him anyway. The Ring General responded that it was personal for Rollins, and personal for him as well, just not for the reasons Rollins believed. Gunther offered a handshake, which Heyman accepted, before stating that Heyman owed him far more than just a “thank you.”

Grade: A

Insights & Backstage Moments:

  • Stephanie Vaquer addressed Liv Morgan in a video promo, saying she was better than the usual “mom jokes.” She warned that if Liv wanted to play dirty, that was fine, and called her pathetic, cheap, and brainless, accusing her of talking a lot but saying nothing of substance. She added that Liv could only try to work through her daddy issues with a man who was jealous of his own father’s success. Vaquer concluded by stating that Liv would never get her hands on the title.

Penta, Je’Von Evans & Dragon Lee vs Los Americanos (El Grande, Rayo & Bravo Americano) – Six-man Tag Team match

Before defending the IC title in a ladder match, Penta teamed up with Je’Von Evans and Dragon Lee to take on Los Americanos (El Grande, Rayo & Bravo Americano). The babyfaces ended up securing the win in a high-paced, action-packed match.

After the match, Rey Mysterio made a surprising return, greeting Penta, Evans, and Lee. Mysterio addressed the crowd and said he had to come out to let Penta know how incredible his career had been.

He stated that the ladder match at WrestleMania had the potential to be the greatest ladder match in history. Although he had missed last year’s Mania due to injury, he had spoken with Adam Pearce and noted that the match was missing one person, himself. Penta then grabbed the microphone and said, “Let’s make history.”

Winner: Penta, Je’Von Evans & Dragon Lee

Grade: B+

Match Insights & Backstage Moments:

  • Penta will defend the Intercontinental title in a ladder match at WrestleMania, and among the participants are his tag partners in this match. Rusev and JD McDonagh are also part of the match.
  • Before Mania, Penta will make history defending the WWE IC title against El Hijo del Vikingo this Saturday at AAA Lucha Libre Worldwide.
  • A video promo from Asuka aired, in which she accused Iyo Sky of trying to take Kairi Sane away from her, despite all the sacrifices Asuka had made to pave the way for them. She said she had done everything out of love for Iyo, who had taken advantage of her kindness. Asuka warned that Iyo would pay and that she would take everything away from her.

Iyo Sky & Rhea Ripley vs Michin & B-Fab

In the final match of the show, Iyo Sky and Rhea Ripley defeated Michin and B-Fab in a tag team match, despite Jade Cargill’s interference, where she took down Rhea, making sure Iyo was unable to make the tag. Sky still managed to duck Michin and roll up B-Fab for the win.

B-Fab, Michin, and Jade attacked Iyo Sky after the match. Rhea came to Iyo’s aid, taking down B-Fab and Michin with a headbutt, but Jade blasted her with a pump kick. Michin and B-Fab held Rhea in the corner while Jade picked up a kendo stick and unloaded on Iyo as Rhea was forced to watch. Jade finished the assault with the Jaded, then blew a kiss at Rhea before leaving.

Winner: Iyo Sky & Rhea Ripley

Grade: B

Match Insights & Backstage Moments:

  • This marked Ripley’s first appearance on Raw since early March, after winning the women’s Elimination Chamber match.
  • It also marked Rhea and Iyo’s first tag team match since losing the title in February.
  • Asuka vs Iyo seemingly took a backseat for Rhea vs Jade, which, despite multiple segments, feels lackluster, considering the involvement of two top names.

WrestleMania contract signing

With Triple H alongside him, GM Adam Pearce hyped the fans for the WrestleMania clash between Brock Lesnar and Oba Femi. Paul Heyman interrupted, stating that tonight would feature a contract signing for one of the most anticipated Mania matches in decades, introducing himself as the greatest Wiseman and Advocate in the industry. The crowd then cut him off with “OBA” chants.

Heyman continued, introducing ‘the conqueror of the Ruler,’ claiming the Ruler couldn’t measure up to the real main event of Mania: Brock Lesnar. Lesnar entered the ring alongside Heyman and greeted Pearce and Triple H.

Pearce then announced Oba Femi, and the Ruler appeared. Femi stepped into the ring, but Lesnar immediately attacked, dropping him from the apron. Femi retaliated by sending Lesnar into the ring post. The action moved back into the ring, with Femi crashing Lesnar through a table.

Pearce called in security, who swarmed the ring to try to separate them. Lesnar and Femi broke free and continued attacking each other, throwing chairs as security scrambled to intervene. The show ended with the two still brawling in the ring.

Grade: B+

Insights & Backstage Moments:

  • The feed cutting off during the brawl was a weird way to end the show.
  • Before the segment, in a promo video, Finn Balor spoke about a side of himself he had never shown Dominik Mysterio, a part he thought was buried forever. He said that Dominik had awakened it, and that at WrestleMania, it was coming for him.
  • Back at the Judgment Day clubhouse, Dominik looked worried about what Balor could mean. JD McDonagh told him not to stress over that, pointing out the real problem was his absentee father being added to the IC title ladder match. Dominik said he could handle his dad, noting that JD would bring back the IC title to the faction, and went with JD to speak with Adam Pearce.
  • Meanwhile, Raquel Rodriguez checked in on Liv Morgan after Stephanie Vaquer’s promo package, but Roxanne Perez rolled up. Morgan asked Perez to step aside so they could talk privately. Morgan wanted to address the fact that Balor had brought Perez into the Judgment Day, and she needed to understand why she had been ousted. Before they could continue, Stephanie Vaquer ambushed both women and whipped Liv, who went crashing into the TV.
