CM Punk and Cody Rhodes survive a controversial finish to keep the SummerSlam title match one-on-one.
CM Punk and Cody Rhodes emerged victorious over GUNTHER and Sami Zayn in the blockbuster main event of WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event, surviving a dramatic and controversial finish to ensure their WWE Undisputed Championship clash at SummerSlam remains a one-on-one affair.
The stakes were enormous heading into the tag team contest. Had GUNTHER and Sami Zayn won, both men would have earned spots in the SummerSlam title match, turning the championship bout into a Fatal Four-Way. Instead, Punk and Rhodes overcame interference, officiating chaos, and championship belt shots to preserve their singles showdown.
The match began with Cody Rhodes and Sami Zayn trading offense before Rhodes established early control with a kitchen sink knee lift and an arm wringer. CM Punk soon entered the match, but GUNTHER immediately changed the momentum by dragging him to the floor and throwing him over the barricade before Sami capitalized with a sustained attack.
Rhodes answered with a snap scoop powerslam, a Beautiful Disaster kick and a series of jabs that set up his signature Bionic Elbow. GUNTHER halted the rally with a thunderous back suplex, but Rhodes landed on his feet and responded with a springboard Cody Cutter before diving onto Zayn at ringside.
GUNTHER’s title belt attack backfires as Nick Aldis restores order
The action escalated as Sami Zayn narrowly escaped Cross Rhodes, delivered a Blue Thunder Driver for a dramatic near fall, and later connected with a corner Exploder Suplex. CM Punk exploded into the match after finally receiving the hot tag, hitting a diving lariat, a swinging neckbreaker, and his trademark running bulldog before locking in the Anaconda Vise.
At the same time, Rhodes trapped GUNTHER in the Figure Four Leglock, forcing both heels into trouble. GUNTHER escaped by clawing Punk’s eyes before Zayn connected with a Helluva Kick on Rhodes, only for Cody to recover and hit Cross Rhodes. Moments later, GUNTHER answered with a crushing short-arm lariat before Punk stunned the champion with a Go to Sleep.
The closing sequence descended into complete chaos. GUNTHER repeatedly applied the Gojira Clutch before Rhodes tagged himself in. Cody connected with Cross Rhodes, but Sami shoved Punk into the cover and referee Charles Robinson, preventing the count.
Punk responded with a Go to Sleep on Zayn, but Rhodes accidentally wiped him out on a springboard attempt after GUNTHER ducked. Sensing an opportunity, the champion grabbed the WWE title belt and blasted Rhodes before planting him with a powerbomb.
A replacement referee sprinted to the ring, only for WWE SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis to pull him outside and stop the count. Aldis then struck GUNTHER with the championship belt, allowing Punk to hit another Go to Sleep. Rhodes crawled into position for the cover as Robinson recovered to count the decisive three.
The victory officially keeps the SummerSlam main event intact, with CM Punk set to challenge Cody Rhodes in a one-on-one match for the WWE Undisputed Championship.
