Cleveland set the final stage before WWE’s historic trip south of the border.
The September 4 edition of WWE SmackDown from the Rocket Arena in Cleveland, Ohio served as the go-home show for Sunday Night’s Main Event, and it closed out with a major announcement for the blue brand’s upcoming international broadcast. Gunther opened the show by calling out Sami Zayn, who emerged from the crowd only to be chased off by a furious Kevin Owens and Finn Balor.
Backstage, CM Punk offered Johnny Gargano a shot at the Undisputed WWE Championship in Gargano’s hometown, and after nine months on the sidelines, Gargano finally accepted. Punk went on to retain his title over Gargano in the main event, with Owens, Balor and Gunther all getting physically involved around ringside.
Following the win, Punk turned his attention to Sami Zayn and challenged him to defend the Undisputed WWE Championship on September 11, when SmackDown travels to Mexico City.
Elsewhere on the show, Chelsea Green was cleared to return to the ring under strict medical conditions, only for Nia Jax to interrupt and demand her own title opportunity. Nick Aldis granted the match, while Nikki Bella and Paige also came to blows backstage, setting up a matchup of their own.

WWE will make its first live return to Mexico in 15 years when Friday Night SmackDown emanates from Arena CDMX in Mexico City on September 11. Four matches have already been confirmed for the Mexico City show, headlined by a fresh Undisputed WWE Championship defense for CM Punk and a Women’s Championship bout that pits Chelsea Green against a returning Nia Jax. AAA’s War Raiders will also step across the aisle to put their Tag Team Championships on the line, while Nikki Bella and Paige settle their issue in singles action.
