Baron Corbin retains; Nia Jax attacks Chelsea Green & more!
In the aftermath of SummerSlam, WWE delivered the fallout edition of SmackDown on August 7. The show emanated live from the Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and featured appearances from returning stars as well as newly crowned Champions.
The show also featured a major return along with an NXT call-up. On the other hand, CM Punk and Kevin Owens engaged in a promo battle; similarly, Cody Rhodes confronted Randy Orton after the attack on Saturday.

WWE SmackDown Results & Winners
- WWE paid a tribute to the late great Dory Funk Jr., and Cody Rhodes kicked off the show by calling out Randy Orton. CM Punk then came out, and after being asked, Punk said he was unaware of Randy Orton. Rhodes told Punk that they had unfinished business, and Punk replied, “Say when.”
- As Cody left, Kevin Owens arrived and had a brief face-off with Rhodes on the entrance ramp. Rhodes offered his mic to Owens, who took it and walked to the ring. Owens and Punk had exchanged a few words off-mic until GM Nick Aldis arrived. Owens addressed his absence, saying that while he was away, Punk continued to prove him right.
- He said Punk had never truly believed he had changed, pointing to the fact that Punk had initially looked past him. Owens insisted that Punk was still the same sociopath he had known. Punk acknowledged that people might not have liked his arrogance, but said he had the championship to back it up.
- He added that Owens, of all people, should have understood his confidence. Owens responded that it had been 10 years since he had held a World Championship and said that humbling Punk would make the moment even more satisfying. Punk then claimed that Owens would still be an independent wrestling weekend warrior if it were not for him.
- Owens noted that Punk had actually taught him what not to do, saying Punk must have felt lonely sitting on the pedestal he had placed himself on. Owens concluded by saying that the wrestling business had taught him how not to become a piece of sh*t like Punk. Punk got into Owens’ face as Nick Aldis and referees swarmed the ring as a shoving contest broke out between the two.
- Backstage, Charlotte Flair spoke about her upcoming clash with Jade Cargill in an interview, while Trick Williams cut a promo, announcing that he will battle Baron Corbin in the title rematch. He called out Corbin for cheating and vowed to regain the title for himself and Lil Yachty.
- Baron Corbin (c) vs Trick Williams – United States title match: Corbin retained the title after nailing Williams with it while the referee was distracted.
- Backstage, Sami Zayn caught up with GM Nick Aldis, stating that he is happy with how it all went for Aldis at SummerSlam. With his kids in the ring post-match, Zayn admitted that it almost made him cry before bringing up his own match and complaining about how unfair it was to add Gunther and Kevin Owens.
- Kevin Owens then arrived to inform Aldis that he wants his title match in Toronto on August 21. Zayn said he is genuinely happy for Owens, but wanted him to acknowledge that KO’s return had came at his expense. Zayn then asked Owens to apologize. Owens said he was sorry, but insisted that Zayn would have done the same thing if their positions had been reversed.
- Zayn accepted Owens’ reasoning and offered to help him in the title match. Owens declined, saying he wanted to accomplish it on his own. Zayn reminded Owens that he would continue pursuing things he wants too.
- Backstage, Baron Corbin was interviewed after another win over Trick Williams when Carmelo Hayes attacked him. Hayes then informed Corbin that he has met with Nick Aldis and he’s got a title match for his hometown next week.
- Chelsea Green came out to celebrate her title win, and then called out her ‘best friend’ Tiffany Stratton. Green apologized to Stratton after what transpired during the ladder match. Stratton said that she wanted to talk to her about something. Fatal Influence then interrupted. Jacy Jayne mocked Stratton, noting how her bestie destroyed all her hopes and dreams of being Tiffy Two Titles.
- Jayne stated that she will take the US title away from Tiffany, who in return offered a title match next week in return for a Tag Team match right now.
- Fatal Influence (Fallon Henley & Lainey Reid) (c) vs Chelsea Green & Tiffany Stratton – WWE Women’s Tag Team titles match: Fatal Influence retained the tag titles after pinning Chelsea Green. The Irresistible Forces (Nia Jax & Lash Legend) attacked Tiffany and Green after the match. Nia also brought in the Green’s Interim title to make her intentions clear.
- Backstage, Damian Priest questioned whether he was supposed to be intimidated by the Tongans now that they had Haku on their side. The War Raiders then approached and declared that they were going to become double champions. R-Truth then arrived to reveal that he had spoken with Nick Aldis and agreed to a three-way match against the War Raiders and the Tongans next week.
- Randy Orton arrived for a promo and was quickly confronted by an irate Cody Rhodes. Orton managed to escape near the entrance ramp as Nick Aldis arrived with officials. Orton said he had given Rhodes exactly what he wanted, the best version of The Legend Killer. He acknowledged that the best version of him was unable to win the title, but the worst version of him can and will bring home number 15.
- Orton vowed that he would ensure Rhodes never held the WWE Championship again. Rhodes responded by saying he would show Orton the worst version of himself and no longer needed to be the “damn good guy.” He also pointed out that ‘The Legend Killer’ Orton is the last legend left in WWE, before asking Who kills Randy Orton?
- Backstage, Sami Zayn vented his complaints to Candice LeRae and Johnny Gargano before CM Punk arrived and questioned whether Zayn was a coward for not confronting him directly. Zayn called Punk a fraud and then revealed that he was dealing with a broken hand.
- Punk laughed, and the two started arguing as Punk stated that he would give Gargano and even LeRae a title shot before him and Zayn needed to get to the back of the line. As Punk left, Zayn yelled at Gargano for letting Punk talk to him like that. LeRae questioned him about why he’s taking it out on them.
- A vignette aired where Nikki Bella said she had done everything she could to stand by her sister and held Paige responsible for Brie Bella being sidelined. She then vowed to make the rest of Paige’s career a living nightmare.
- In a video promo, Shinsuke Nakamura reminded the Tongans (Haku, Talla & Tama Tonga) that the King of Strong Style is back, and that this time he would not be fighting alone. Nakamura declared that he was starting a war and would no longer be a one-man army.
- Charlotte Flair vs Jade Cargill: B-Fab and Michin interfered in the match as Alexa Bliss returned to even the odds. As Bliss made her entrance, the lights went out in the arena, and Tatum Paxley took out B-Fab and Michin with a crossbody from the ring post. Flair capitalized to pin Cargill and win in the main event. Post-match, Alexa, Flair, and Paxley celebrated the win.
