Damian Priest turns on R-Truth, Randy Orton vows to capture his 15th World Title & more!

For the first time in 15 years, WWE returned to Mexico with its weekly shows during TripleMania 34 weekend. The September 11 edition of Friday Night SmackDown concluded at the Arena CDMX in Mexico City, Mexico. 

The show featured a stacked lineup with both World titles up for grabs, along with two AAA title matches and a major grudge match. The fallout from Sunday Night’s Main Event also played out on the show in Mexico City.

WWE SmackDown Results & Summary

• Randy Orton kicked off the show from Mexico City and talked about his match with Cody Rhodes at SNME, noting that Rhodes did not have a killer instinct like him, before shifting focus to the Undisputed title match in the main event. Orton also vowed to win his 15th World title.

• Backstage, Tiffany Stratton informed Chelsea Green that she will be in her corner to make sure Lash Legend doesn’t get involved in the title match.
• Rey Fenix (c) vs Ricky Saints – AAA Cruiserweight Title match: Fenix defeated Saints to retain the title. Post-match, Fenix offered a handshake, but Saints ignored him, checking his teeth repeatedly.

• Backstage, Cathy Kelley interviewed Sami Zayn, who said he believed he was the only person capable of taking the title from CM Punk. Johnny Gargano then arrived with Candice LeRae and reminded Zayn that, if Sami won, he would receive the first title opportunity. Gargano turned the question into a statement, and Zayn ultimately agreed to give Gargano the first title shot.

• Nikki Bella vs Paige: Bella picked up the win over Paige after using the ropes to her advantage in the pin.

• Backstage, Cathy Kelley interviewed Nia Jax and Lash Legend. Jax said Chelsea Green never deserved to become champion, calling her title reign a travesty and criticizing her poor math skills. She added that while she usually made someone’s career by breaking their face, she intended to end one tonight. Lash said she would be there as well and was ready to break some ribs.
• Trick Williams came out to deliver a promo and embraced the “Quinones” chants from the Mexico City crowd. Williams then introduced Lil Yachty, but Baron Corbin dragged a dazed Yachty down the ramp before escaping as Williams came sprinting. Williams checked on Yachty as Corbin returned to attack Williams with a kendo stick.

• Backstage, Finn Balor met with GM Nick Aldis and made his case for becoming the No. 1 contender. Aldis suggested that Balor pursue the Money in the Bank briefcase instead. Danhausen then approached and asked if Aldis meant literal money in the bank, prompting Aldis to tell him he would explain later.
  • Gunther interrupted and argued that Balor had not mattered in a decade. Balor made a side comment, calling Gunther a “whiny little bitch,” prompting Gunther to snap back and demand to know what he had said. Balor responded by punching him in the face as Aldis intervened.

• Chelsea Green (c) vs Nia Jax – Interim WWE Women’s Title match: Tiffany Stratton aided Chelsea Green against Lash Legend as Green managed to fight back and pin Nia to retain the title in her first title defense.

• Backstage, Cathy Kelley interviewed CM Punk. Punk said that sometimes bad behavior had to be rewarded in order to teach someone a lesson, adding that winning a championship could feel like hitting the idiot lottery. He said Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens were both part of the problem, while he also had to contend with Finn Balor and Gunther.
  • Punk then made it clear that he had no intention of losing his title to someone who had broken his hand while jerking it to his fluke nine-day championship reign.

• War Raiders (Erik & Ivar) (c) vs Damian Priest & R-Truth – AAA World Tag Team Titles match: War Raiders defeated Truth and Priest to retain the titles. Post-match, Priest turned on Truth, hitting him with a lariat and following it up with South of Heaven.

• Backstage, Fatal Influence (Jacy Jayne, Lainey Reid, and Fallon Henley) confronted Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss. Tatum Paxley then appeared and pointed out that she and Flair had defeated Fatal Influence, telling them to hold on tightly to the tag team titles.
  • After Fatal Influence left, Paxley apologized to Flair for what had happened last weekend. Flair said she trusted Alexa, but she was not convinced that Paxley’s actions had been a mistake. Bliss told Paxley to give Flair some time.

• Backstage, Ricky Saints interrupted Cathy Kelley’s interview with Rey Fenix and apologized for cold-shouldering him earlier, stating that he was just upset about the loss. The two shook hands. Saints left as Fenix continued the interview. Ricky returned and attacked Fenix.
• CM Punk (c) vs Sami Zayn – Undisputed WWE Title match: Johnny Gargano and Candice LeRae aided Sami in the match but failed as Kevin Owens arrived and tried to hit Sami with the title but instead took out Punk. Zayn took out KO with a low blow.

• Sami capitalized on the chaos to hit the Helluva Kick and pin Punk to capture the Undisputed title for the second time in his WWE career.
