The road to Money in the Bank rolled on with a stacked go-home stretch on the September 25 edition of Friday Night SmackDown, emanating from the Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana. Trick Williams opened the show by putting his United States Championship on the line against Baron Corbin inside a Steel Cage, while two Triple Threat qualifiers determined the final entrants into the Men’s and Women’s Money in the Bank Ladder Matches.

Elsewhere, Randy Orton sat down with Michael Cole for a tense interview centered on Cody Rhodes, while Sami Zayn found himself fielding demands from Finn Balor, Johnny Gargano and Candice LeRae just a week after retaining the Undisputed WWE Title.

WWE SmackDown Results & Summary

• Trick Williams (c) (w/ Lil Yachty) vs Baron Corbin – WWE United States Championship Steel Cage match: The show opened with the cage lowering as Williams and Corbin renewed their rivalry. Corbin took control early, sending Williams face-first into the cage during a break, before both men climbed to the top of the structure. Corbin superplexed Williams off the top for a near fall.

• Williams tried to escape through the door, but Corbin cut him off and used the door to level Lil Yachty on the outside. Corbin later kicked out of a Trick Shot, a first for the finisher, before countering with a Deep Six for a near fall of his own.

• Williams rallied with three straight Book Ends to retain the title and keep his spot in the Men’s Money in the Bank Ladder Match secure.

• Backstage, Cathy Kelley interviewed Lash Legend and Nia Jax ahead of Legend’s qualifier. Legend brushed off Charlotte Flair and Giulia’s credentials and said she wasn’t worried, while Jax insisted her Irresistible Forces partner was more dominant and better-looking than both.

• A recap aired of CM Punk attacking Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens the previous week. Backstage, GM Nick Aldis pulled Punk aside and asked him into his office, where Owens was waiting.
• Aldis told both men their feud had to end and that he couldn’t have their issues bleeding into the Money in the Bank qualifiers. Punk said he’d stay out of Owens’ way if Owens stayed out of his, since Owens had “nothing” Punk wanted. Owens simply walked out without responding.

• Backstage, Chelsea Green vented to Tiffany Stratton and Paige about the danger of every Money in the Bank qualifier being a threat to cash in on her title, with Nikki Bella also circling. After Stratton and Paige left, Bella confronted Green directly and told her nothing would stop her from becoming champion.

• Charlotte Flair vs Giulia vs Lash Legend – Women’s Money in the Bank Qualifying match: A fast-paced Triple Threat saw all three women trade near falls, including a Giulia top-rope dropkick and a Charlotte Flair moonsault onto both opponents. Charlotte reversed a Lash Extension attempt into a Figure-Eight, but Giulia broke it up with a Northern Lights Bomb.

• Legend broke up Giulia’s cover and hit her own Lash Extension for the win, punching her ticket to New Orleans.

• Backstage, Blake Monroe mocked Giulia over her loss, calling her a nobody who’d fade back into “obscurity.” Giulia punched her and the two had to be separated, with Nick Aldis booking the pair for a match next week.

• Randy Orton sat down with Michael Cole for an interview, immediately grilling him over what Cody Rhodes had said about him off-camera the previous week. Orton ran through Cody’s evolution from Dusty’s son to the American Nightmare, insisting that unlike Rhodes, he himself has never changed. He got in Cole’s face and demanded to know, point-blank, whether Cole believed Rhodes was capable of kicking him in the head — and stormed off once Cole said No.

• Backstage, Sami Zayn was interviewed and insisted he was the “last real good guy” in the locker room, only for Finn Balor to interrupt and vow he was coming for the WWE Title regardless of who’s holding it. Johnny Gargano and Candice LeRae then arrived demanding their own title opportunity.

• Zayn revealed he’d fought GM Aldis for spots in next week’s Money in the Bank qualifiers for both Gargano and LeRae, then asked Gargano if he was “ride or die” with him. Gargano agreed, though LeRae looked visibly skeptical throughout.
• Fatal Influence (Jacy Jayne, Fallon Henley & Lainey Reid) vs Chelsea Green, Paige & Tiffany Stratton – Six-Woman Tag Team match: Paige got the hot tag late and rallied on Jayne for a near fall before the numbers caught up with the babyfaces. Chaos spilled outside the ring, and Nikki Bella tripped Paige from ringside as she ran the ropes.
• Jayne capitalized with a Rolling Encore for the win.

• CM Punk vs Finn Balor vs GUNTHER – Men’s Money in the Bank Qualifying match: The three former world champions main-evented the show in a frantic Triple Threat. GUNTHER locked Punk in a deep sleeper hold, only for Balor to break it up with a Coup de Grâce to GUNTHER’s back.

• Before Balor could capitalize, Punk rolled over and pinned GUNTHER to steal the win, securing the sixth and final spot in the Men’s Money in the Bank Ladder Match. Punk and Balor shared a moment of respect after the bell despite the finish.
