The upcoming September 4 episode of Friday Night SmackDown was taped alongside Raw at Rocket Arena in Cleveland, Ohio, on August 28, in the lead-up to WWE’s first-ever Sunday Night’s Main Event, which takes place two days later in Atlanta.

The taping came right on the heels of Sami Zayn’s ambush of Kevin Owens, Gunther and Finn Balor, an attack that also saw CM Punk laid out after he tried to intervene. That fallout carries directly into this week’s show, alongside a fresh chapter in the Undisputed WWE Championship picture, the Miz’s 20th-anniversary celebration, and continued fallout from Nikki Bella’s return.

• Danhausen opened the SmackDown taping with a crowd-only segment, poking fun at Cleveland’s local sports teams before “uncursing” both the Cavaliers and the Browns.
• Gunther, dressed in street clothes, called out Sami Zayn, who emerged from the crowd and branded the Undisputed WWE Champion a hypocrite for keeping company with CM Punk. Finn Balor and Kevin Owens both got involved, and Zayn was forced to retreat.
• Backstage, CM Punk found a dejected Johnny Gargano and talked him into accepting a shot at the Undisputed WWE Championship.
• Non-Title match: Charlotte Flair and Tatum Paxley defeated Women’s Tag Team Champions Fallon Henley and Lainey Reid, only for The Baddies to lay both teams out after the bell.
• Nikki Bella was interrupted mid-interview by Paige, who accused her of betraying the values Bella claims to represent. A Paige vs Nikki Bella match was set for SmackDown’s Mexico City stop.
• Nick Aldis brought WWE’s doctor out to address Chelsea Green, who was cleared to compete provided she wears a protective face mask. Nia Jax and Lash Legend then interrupted, with Jax demanding her title shot — which Aldis confirmed for Mexico City, before setting up an immediate match between Jax and Tiffany Stratton.
• Nia Jax defeated Tiffany Stratton, with a beaten-down Green consoling her afterward.
• The Miz marked his 20th anniversary in WWE with a promo for the live crowd, only to turn heel by mocking Cleveland and saying he’d rather celebrate with LeBron in Philadelphia.
• Bakusai (Shinsuke Nakamura & Kyoki) defeated The Miz & Kit Wilson, after which the MFTs and Haku squared off with the winners.
• Blake Monroe was ambushed by Giulia during a backstage interview with Cathy Kelley, and the two brawled out into the arena.
• Sami Zayn got to Johnny Gargano again backstage, extracting a promise that Gargano would hand him the first title shot if he won the main event.
• Undisputed WWE Championship match: CM Punk defeated Johnny Gargano in a match marked by outside interference from Kevin Owens, Gunther, Finn Balor and Sami Zayn, retaining the title with the GTS.
• After the cameras stopped rolling, Zayn attacked Punk before Cody Rhodes made the save, planting Zayn with a Cross Rhodes and a GTS to send the Cleveland crowd home happy.
