Austin Theory recalls the moment he realized Vince McMahon viewed him as one of WWE’s future stars
Austin Theory has revealed that he didn’t immediately realize how highly Vince McMahon viewed him during his early days on WWE’s main roster.
While many fans could see the company investing heavily in the young star, Theory admitted it took one unforgettable moment for him to fully understand that McMahon had much bigger plans.
Speaking on ImPAULSIVE with Logan Paul, Theory reflected on his transition from NXT to WWE’s main roster, discussing his rapid rise, his United States Championship victory, and the backstage conversations that shaped his career.
He also shared an unexpected story about John Cena speaking directly to Vince McMahon after their WrestleMania 39 match.
Austin Theory explains when Vince McMahon’s support became obvious
During the interview, Logan Paul asked Theory what it was like arriving on WWE’s main roster and being “thrown into the deep end at such a young age.”
Theory admitted that he initially believed he was simply continuing the momentum he had built during his successful run with The Way in NXT.
“I felt like that’s kind of the tip of it for me in NXT,” Theory said. “When I got to the main roster, I didn’t even kind of realize like Vince was like pushing me and behind me.”
Everything changed after Theory captured the United States Championship and became the youngest United States Champion in WWE history.
Theory recalled Vince McMahon personally designing the championship celebration in a way that immediately caught his attention.
“I remember when I won the US title… Vince wanted all the heels to come out, hold me up in the ring, and then as I left the ring, he came out at the end on the stage and held my arm.”
That public endorsement became the moment everything finally clicked.
“And I think in that moment, I was like, ‘Whoa, like something’s going on here.’”
Before that championship celebration, Theory said his primary focus had been finding his personality inside WWE, particularly during his entertaining run alongside The Way. Once he reached the main roster, however, McMahon quickly made him one of the company’s featured young stars.
John Cena offered career-changing advice before and after WrestleMania 39

Theory also opened up about one of the biggest matches of his career—his WrestleMania 39 victory over childhood hero John Cena.
Before stepping into the ring, Cena invited Theory to dinner and offered advice that initially confused the rising WWE star.
“I just remember him telling me, ‘You’re not a bad guy. Like I want you to be you.’”
Theory admitted he struggled to understand what Cena meant because he viewed himself as an obnoxious heel character.
“I was like, ‘Man, I’m this obnoxious, over-the-top, cocky heel.’ And he’s like, ‘I feel like that’s not going to last too long. You got to be yourself.’”
The advice became even more meaningful considering Theory grew up idolizing Cena. He revealed he once had a cardboard cutout of the WWE legend in his bedroom and called him “always my dude.”
Theory also shared a touching memory involving his grandfather, who had one special request if his grandson ever wrestled Cena.
“All I ask from you is when you face John Cena that I get a hot dog and a Coke in the crowd.”
According to Theory, his girlfriend made sure that the wish came true on WrestleMania day. Perhaps the biggest surprise came after the match. Theory revealed that Cena personally approached Vince McMahon on his behalf.
“Hey, I went and talked to Vince. I told him, ‘You’re not a bad guy,’ so hopefully that helps you become a good guy.”
Laughing while remembering the conversation, Theory simply responded, “Let’s see.” Looking back now, Theory believes both Vince McMahon’s public endorsement and John Cena’s backstage support helped shape one of the most important periods of his WWE career.
When did Austin Theory realize Vince McMahon was pushing him?
Theory said he realized it after winning the United States Championship when Vince McMahon personally celebrated with him on the entrance stage.
What advice did John Cena give Austin Theory?
Cena encouraged Theory to stop thinking of himself as simply a heel and instead embrace his real personality, believing it would help his long-term success.
