A hometown triumph caps a hard-fought championship classic as Chad Gable finally captures the Intercontinental Title.
Chad Gable fulfilled a lifelong dream at WWE SummerSlam 2026, defeating Penta in a thrilling contest to become the new Intercontinental Champion in front of his hometown crowd in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
The championship bout showcased elite technical wrestling, breathtaking high-risk offense and incredible resilience from both competitors. Penta pushed the champion to his limits with his trademark offense, but Gable battled through injury and bloodied adversity to produce one of the finest victories of his career.
The emotional celebration that followed made the moment even more memorable as Gable celebrated with his family inside the ring after finally capturing the prestigious title.
Chad Gable overcomes adversity in a championship war
The match began with a show of mutual respect as both competitors shook hands before immediately engaging in a technical exchange.
Gable quickly showcased his amateur wrestling credentials with a leg lock takedown before attempting an early ankle lock. Penta escaped and answered with a lightning-fast hurricanrana, setting the tone for a fast-paced encounter. Momentum shifted repeatedly throughout the contest.
Gable connected with a Russian leg sweep, while Penta answered with a superkick, bulldog, and a backbreaker for the first near fall. Gable responded with a huge German suplex after catching Penta’s springboard attempt, but the champion kicked out.
The punishment continued to mount as Penta repeatedly targeted Gable with crushing chops before launching him over the top rope with a spectacular dive to the outside.
As the match progressed, Gable’s left shoulder became a major concern after crashing awkwardly into the turnbuckle. To make matters worse, blood began pouring from above his eye, but the challenger refused to slow down.
Penta shows respect after Gable’s emotional hometown victory
Despite his injuries, Gable continued fighting. Penta delivered the devastating Pentadriver, yet Gable somehow survived the cover.
The champion followed with his signature Sacrifice arm attack before nearly ending the match with the Mexican Destroyer, but Gable repeatedly found ways to stay alive. The closing stretch saw both men empty their arsenals.
Gable stunned Penta with a breathtaking German suplex onto the ring apron before following it with a picture-perfect moonsault to the floor. Moments later, he connected with a diving headbutt, but even that wasn’t enough to finish the resilient champion.
Penta answered with an incredible Mexican Destroyer on the ring apron before bringing Gable back inside for another near fall. With both men exhausted, Penta attempted one final Mexican Destroyer. This time, Gable countered beautifully, trapping the champion in a tight ankle lock.
Penta desperately crawled toward the ropes, but the hold was locked in too deep. With nowhere left to go, the champion tapped out, crowning Chad Gable as the new Intercontinental Champion.
After the bell, sportsmanship took center stage. Penta personally picked up the championship, wrapped it around Gable’s waist, raised his hand and embraced him before leaving the ring to allow the new champion his moment.
Gable’s wife, children and parents then entered the ring to celebrate the milestone with him. As chants of “You deserve it!” echoed throughout the arena, Gable addressed his hometown crowd.
“My name is Chad Gable and I was born, raised and I live in Minneapolis, Minnesota.”
He thanked his family for standing beside him through every high and low of his career before proudly declaring that he could finally call himself the WWE Intercontinental Champion.
The celebration ended with a lighthearted moment as a masked individual wearing a Mug Root Beer shirt and jacket handed Gable a can of Mug Root Beer, which he happily drank while soaking in the cheers from his hometown fans.
