Nick Aldis shocks the WWE Universe by turning a Triple Threat into a Fatal Four-Way before Kevin Owens survives Sami Zayn, Finn Bálor and Gunther
WWE SummerSlam 2026 Night Two kicked off with absolute chaos as what was originally advertised as a Triple Threat Match became a Fatal Four-Way after a pair of stunning announcements from SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis.
Finn Bálor made his entrance first before Sami Zayn joined him in the ring. Just as the opening bell seemed moments away, Aldis walked onto the stage with a major announcement.
The WWE official revealed that, in the interest of doing what was “best for business,” he had decided to add another competitor to the match. Gunther’s music immediately hit, and the former World Heavyweight Champion made his way to the ring before shaking Aldis’ hand.
However, Aldis wasn’t finished. He informed the crowd that he hadn’t added just one Superstar. Instead, he had made another executive decision, turning the contest into a Fatal Four-Way by introducing Kevin Owens as the final participant.
Kevin Owens survives fast-paced Fatal Four-Way war
Once the bell rang, all four competitors wasted little time trading strikes. Sami Zayn opened by firing right hands at both Finn Bálor and Gunther before Kevin Owens immediately flattened Gunther with a cannonball in the corner.
The longtime friends then shared a brief embrace before exchanging punches, with Owens following up by planting Zayn with a senton.
Owens continued to dictate the early pace, sending Gunther to the outside before launching himself off the top rope with a breathtaking swanton onto all three opponents at ringside.
Back inside the ring, Owens attempted a Stunner, but Gunther trapped him in a sleeper hold. Zayn quickly broke up the submission before Bálor attacked Zayn from behind, creating another momentum shift.
Gunther responded with a thunderous big boot to Bálor before targeting Zayn with crushing knees and devastating knife-edge chops.
Every Superstar came within inches of victory
Finn Bálor mounted his comeback with consecutive Sling Blades before attempting the Coup de Grace. Gunther narrowly avoided the aerial attack before countering with a powerful powerbomb and locking Bálor in a Boston Crab. Owens broke the submission with heavy right hands before climbing to the top rope himself.
Another aerial exchange followed as Owens suplexed Bálor from the top rope before Zayn nearly stole the victory with a surprise cover.
One of the match’s biggest moments came when Owens attempted another Swanton Bomb, only for Zayn to get his knees up. Owens immediately grabbed his neck, forcing the referee to briefly check on his condition.
As the official’s attention shifted toward Owens, Gunther locked Zayn in another sleeper hold. Bálor capitalized by soaring from the top rope with a Coup de Grace onto Zayn, seemingly securing the victory before Gunther broke up the pin at the very last second.
The closing moments became even more frantic. Owens blasted Gunther with a superkick before delivering consecutive Stunners to both Gunther and Bálor.
Zayn answered with a Blue Thunder Bomb that nearly earned him the victory over Owens before setting up for the Helluva Kick. Owens had one final counter remaining.
He intercepted Zayn with a superkick before connecting with a thunderous Stunner in the middle of the ring. This time there was no escape, as Owens covered Zayn for the three-count to earn a future Undisputed WWE Championship opportunity.
The victory capped off a thrilling opener and immediately established Kevin Owens as the next challenger for WWE’s biggest prize.
