Gunther & Damian Priest battled for the World Championship
The World Heavyweight Championship match between Gunther and Damian Priest at WWE Survivor Series 2024 delivered a thrilling contest filled with technical prowess, hard-hitting action and high drama.
The match began with a display of mat wrestling, as both competitors engaged in a battle of holds and counterholds. Gunther, the Ring General, utilized his signature strategy of maintaining distance, frustrating Priest early on. However, the challenger found his opening and rattled the champion with a fierce ear-boxing counter.
Gunther quickly regained control, targeting Priest’s injured shoulder with vicious precision, delivering punishing knee strikes and expertly isolating the arm. Priest fought back with desperation strikes, igniting the crowd with a fiery comeback. A charging back elbow and a reverse STO brought him within a heartbeat of victory, but Gunther’s resilience kept the match alive.
The pace intensified as Priest avoided a powerbomb and countered with Hell’s Gate, attempting to wear down the champion from the mat. Although Gunther escaped, Priest’s superkick cut him off, and a failed attempt at the Razor’s Edge led to more damage to his shoulder.
Gunther seized the moment with a Gojira Clutch and a devastating Tenryu Powerbomb, but Priest refused to stay down. The challenger rallied with a successful Razor’s Edge, but it wasn’t enough to dethrone the champion. Gunther’s bone-shaking chops and relentless grappling forced Priest into a precarious position as they fought atop the turnbuckle.
In a pivotal moment, Priest shoved Gunther off the ropes but crashed to the floor himself. Referee Rod Zapata checked on the fallen Priest, creating an opening for Finn Balor to interfere. The Judgment Day member executed a devastating Coup de Grace off the steel steps, momentarily tilting the odds in Priest’s favor.
Gunther quickly neutralized Balor with a thunderous boot and dragged Priest back into the ring. Unfazed by the interference, the Ring General delivered a punishing combination of a powerbomb followed by hammer-and-anvil elbows before locking in the Gojira Clutch. Priest struggled valiantly, but his body gave out, forcing the referee to call for the stoppage.
Result: Gunther defeated Damian Priest via referee stoppage with the Gojira Clutch to retain the WWE World Heavyweight Championship
