Rey Fenix replaced Rey Mysterio to face at WWE WrestleMania 41
WrestleMania 41 delivered another jaw-dropping moment as Rey Fenix clashed against El Grande Americano in a match that blurred the lines between lucha libre tradition and ruthless innovation.
The bout was preceded by a festive, yet curious, entrance as a mariachi band donning El Grande Americano masks performed live on the stage. With trumpets blaring and the crowd buzzing, El Grande Americano made his grand arrival.
But before the bell even rang, tensions exploded as he shoved fellow luchador Vikingo, only to eat a stiff kick for his troubles. Undeterred, El Grande Americano rolled into the ring and the referee called for the opening bell.
Rey Fenix wasted no time, launching into the match with his trademark agility. A lightning-fast hurricanrana nearly ended things in seconds.
Fenix flew off the top with a missile dropkick, sending his masked opponent reeling to the outside. The pace was relentless as Fenix soared with a top-rope crossbody to the floor, keeping the WrestleMania crowd on their feet.
But the tide shifted quickly. El Grande Americano countered a leap with a reverse German suplex, then punished Fenix with a flurry of right hands and a top-rope reverse 450 splash that nearly ended it.
The crowd gasped as El Grande Americano tried to rip Fenix’s mask, but the lucha legend fired back with a Black Fire Driver for a close two-count. Fenix attempted to finish it with the Goodbye Amigo kick, walking the top rope and smashing El Grande Americano with a brutal strike. But disaster struck. Hidden beneath El Grande Americano’s mask was a metal plate, and Fenix’s leg bounced off it, injuring him in the process.
Sensing opportunity, El Grande Americano locked in a vicious ankle lock, but Fenix rolled through for a near-fall. As he flew from the ropes with a crossbody, El Grande Americano headbutted him mid-air—the metal doing unseen damage once again. He followed up with a top-rope diving headbutt, covering Fenix for the 1-2-3.
Winner: El Grande Americano
