One Half of A-Town Down Under open challenges “The Notorious” to a handicap match
Austin Theory, one-half of the WWE Tag Team Champions, has not been complacent since capturing the titles alongside Grayson Waller at WrestleMania 40. The dynamic duo, known as A-Town Down Under, has successfully defended their titles and taken their brand global, notably appearing in Saudi Arabia. Now, Theory is looking to push boundaries even further.
In a recent interview with Battleground Podcast, Theory made waves by issuing an open challenge to none other than UFC superstar Conor McGregor. Demonstrating his ambition and flair for the dramatic, Theory didn’t stop there; he also threw down the gauntlet to multiple UFC fighters, showcasing his eagerness for a high-profile crossover.
“Is it Conor McGregor? Is that who we want? Is that who wants to step up to Austin Theory, the undefeated tag team champion?” Theory provocatively asked. “Maybe Conor’s so tough, maybe he just wants to fight both the tag team champions. So maybe he has a handicap match because, you know, his ego. Because me and Grayson Waller, we don’t have egos, you know? We’re very set straight, we work hard, we’re champions. We show up to work, only if we’re not busy. So, Conor McGregor, maybe that’s the crossover.”
Austin Theory wants to fight the “UFC guys”
The confidence exuded by Theory is palpable. Despite their undefeated streak in tag team defenses, Theory and Waller technically suffered a blemish on their record when LA Knight and The Street Profits defeated them and their temporary ally Carmelo Hayes on the May 24 episode of “WWE SmackDown“. This minor setback, however, hasn’t dented Theory’s expansive ambitions.
“But really, any of the UFC guys. I mean, that’d be pretty cool to see, you know?” Theory continued. “And watching those punches go from that to up on my shoulders into an A-Town Down, you know? Not ready for that! But I’m down. I’m down, I’m excited! Why not?”
Theory’s audacious proposal reflects his desire to break new ground and attract a broader audience to WWE. The prospect of a match between a WWE superstar and a UFC fighter, especially someone as notorious as Conor McGregor, promises not only an electrifying showdown but also a potential boon for both wrestling and mixed martial arts fans.
As A-Town Down Under continues to dominate the tag team division, Theory’s challenge stands as a bold statement of intent. Whether McGregor or any other UFC fighter will step up remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: Austin Theory is ready to make history and solidify his legacy in WWE with or without his tag team partner by his side.
