The AFC Women’s Champions League draw is upon us as the best teams in Asia prepare to lock horns in the group stage. The draws for the AFC Women’s Champions League will be held on September 11 in Kuala Lumpur, starting from 12:30 PM IST.

The defending Indian Women’s League champions, East Bengal FC, are the only club from India in the AFC Women’s Champions League group stage draw. They have made it to the group stage after finishing as group toppers in the preliminary round.

All eyes on East Bengal

Those who follow Indian Football know that the Women’s Champions League has come at a critical time. In the larger scheme of things, the landscape is chaotic, but not so much for women’s football. With India qualifying for the AFC Women’s Asian Cup for the first time on merit, and the U20 women’s team making it to the AFC U20 Women’s Asian Cup after almost two decades, there are positive signs for Indian women’s football.

The responsibility will be on East Bengal to continue this momentum and bring more eyeballs to Indian Football. The Red and Gold Brigade has been exceptionally consistent in the last twelve months. First, they dominated the Indian Women’s League to win by a huge margin and then showcased their potential in the preliminary round of the AFC Women’s Champions League.

East Bengal are placed in Pot 3 alongside Stallion Laguna from the Philippines and North Korea’s Naegohyang. The form that East Bengal are in currently would keep them confident of taking on any team and progressing through the knockouts from any group.
