The spotlight will be on Deepak Bhoria who replaced Amit Panghal in the 51kg weight category.

The IBA Men's World Boxing Championships 2023 is set to be held from May 1 to May 14, 2023, in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. A 13-member contingent will represent India in the prestigious event. The squad will be led by Shiva Thapa, a six-time Asian Championships medallist alongside 29-year-old Muhammad Hussamuddin.

Spotlight will also be on the 25-year-old, Deepak Bhoria who secured a place in the squad (51kg category) ahead of Tokyo Olympian Amit Panghal. Deepak has been under the shadow of Amit for the past few years.

The men's Worlds come soon after India's successful showing in the Women's World Boxing Championships, where four Indian women won gold medals. It is a testament to the strength and depth of Indian boxing and bodes well for the country's chances at the upcoming men's event.

With new selection criteria in place, 2019 World Championships silver medallist Amit Panghal failed to make the squad and has travelled as a reserve member. The recently appointed High-Performance Director, Bernard Dunne, introduced new selection criteria. Boxers in each weight category were assessed during a 12-day training camp, and the pugilist with the best performance was selected in the team. Amit scored 682 points, whereas Deepak scored 731 points during the 12-day evaluation process, resulting in his selection.
