Sanjeet, Varinder shine on day 1 of 7th Elite Men's National Boxing Championship
Shiva Thapa and Amit Panghal will be in action on Monday.
Asian Championships 2021 gold medalist Sanjeet (92kg) and three-time National Champion Varinder Singh (60kg) showcased remarkable performances on day one to kick off their 7th Elite Men’s National Boxing Championships campaign with victories.
Sanjeet, representing SSCB, faced Karnataka’s Jagadheeshwaran J, utilizing his experience to dominate from the outset. His aggressive approach and powerful punches proved too challenging for Jagadheeshwaran, resulting in a first-round win via a referee-stopped contest. Sanjeet gears up to clash with Chandigarh’s Sawan Gill in the round of 16 on Tuesday.
Varinder, competing for RSPB (Railway Sports Promotion Board), began cautiously against Amlesh Kumar of Bihar, testing his opponent initially before launching counter-attacks to end the first round. Buoyed by his confident performance, Varinder secured a comfortable 5-0 win. He will now face Maharashtra’s Vishal Nupe in the round of 32 clash on Sunday.
Rajasthan’s Harsh Choudhary (80kg), a participant in the 2023 Men’s World Championships, confronted Shivam Saini of Uttar Pradesh in his tournament opener. Harsh displayed dominance with quick movements, strength, and precise punches, securing a unanimous 5-0 decision win. He progresses to face Chander Dev Singh of Jammu & Kashmir in the round of 16 on Tuesday.
