In a historic moment for Indian sports, Vijayveer Sidhu secured a 17th Olympic quota in shooting for India in the upcoming Paris Olympics 2024 games. This achievement marks the highest number of quotas India has ever secured in a single Olympic Games, surpassing the previous record of 15 quotas at the Tokyo Olympics.
Sidhu, competing in the men’s 25m rapid-fire pistol event at the Asian Olympics Qualifiers in Jakarta, finished fourth in the qualifying round with a score of 577 points. His performance ensured him a place among the four of the six finalists eligible for the Olympic Games quotas.
This achievement is not just a personal victory for Sidhu, but a significant milestone for Indian shooting. The record was previously set by Rhythm Sangwan, who won a bronze medal in the 25m sports pistol category at the qualifiers, ensuring that India will be sending its largest-ever shooting contingent to the Paris Olympics.
Sidhu’s success is a testament to his hard work, dedication, and relentless pursuit of excellence that defines the spirit of Indian sports. His journey to the final, where he will compete later in the day, has been marked by determination and grit.
In addition to Sidhu’s achievement, the women’s 50m Rifle 3P event saw Sift Kaur Samra and Ashi Chouksey clinch the silver and bronze medals respectively, further highlighting the prowess of Indian shooters on the international stage.
