The country’s total medal count now stands at 17.

Reigning Asian Junior champions, Nisha (52kg) and Akansha (70kg), exhibited a strong performance, securing medals alongside six other Indian pugilists on the seventh day of the IBA Junior World Boxing Championships 2023 in Yerevan, Armenia.

Once again, Indian girls spearheaded the proceedings with a dominant display. All five boxers in action won their respective matches to advance to the semifinals. Akansha (70kg) initiated the day aggressively, although her opponent, Kurbonboeva Rayhona of Uzbekistan, unsettled the Indian pugilist with a counterattack. However, Akansha clinched the win with a 4-1 split decision verdict.

Nisha (52kg), on the other hand, showcased her strength against Grace Conway of Ireland, winning by a unanimous 5-0 decision. Shrushti secured a comfortable win in the 63kg category after the referee stopped the contest in round two against Mariia Kazaova of Russia.

Kritika (75kg) displayed a similarly dominant performance, not allowing her opponent, Melendez Sanchez of Mexico, to settle down before the bout was stopped by the referee in round one.

Vini (57kg) progressed to the semis as her opponent, Nunez Naiomi of Trinidad and Tobago, gave her a walkover.

In the boys’ section, it was a mixed day for the country as three of the five competing boxers reached the final four. Hemant Sangwan (80+kg) and Sikandar (48kg) outperformed their opponents, Bachevvski Roselin of Bulgaria and Urmanov Ramzidin of Kyrgyzstan, respectively, winning their bouts with identical 5-0 decisions.
