Algerian boxer, Imane Khelif, found herself in gender eligibility issues stemming from alleged XY chromosomes.

As the year is drawing to a close, Google has released its list of the most-searched athletes for 2024 and the Algerian boxer and Paris Olympics gold medalist, Imane Khelif, who became the talking point for both her gold medal victory and the gender-related controversy during the Paris Olympics has topped the charts.

As far as the year is concerned, Khelif’s gold medal win in Paris Olympics 2024 in 66kg event wasn’t without challenges after having earlier been disqualified from the 2023 World Boxing Championship for alleged gender eligibility issues stemming from alleged XY chromosomes. But she later regained eligibility based on the International Olympic Committee rules.

But its wasn’t the end of the drama her Paris Olympics journey reached a dramatic high when her opponent, Italian boxer Angela Carini, forfeited their bout just 46 seconds in, citing Khelif’s overwhelming power but later Khelif went on to win gold in the women’s 66kg boxing category.
