Five out of the top 10 most searched personalities on India are sportspersons.
India’s best female wrestler Vinesh Phogat, who had an unforgettable Paris Olympics campaign due to disqualification has become the most searched personality on Google in India in 2024. Vinesh participated at the Olympics in the 50kg category, where she reached the finals to confirm at least a silver medal.
En route, she created the upset of a decade by defeating Tokyo Olympic gold medallist and four-time World Champion Yui Susaki. The Japanese, renowned for her dominance in the 50kg category, had never lost an international match before her defeat to Vinesh and had won the Tokyo Olympics without conceding a single point. Vinesh did an unthinkable that day and lifted the spirit of the entire nation.

The 30-year-old Indian kept calm, was defensive in her whole about, and never lost any momentum in between. In the last 20 seconds, she seized her opportunity, executing a successful takedown to secure victory and advance to the finals. She then reached the finals. The entire nation was hoping for a gold from Vinesh.
However, in a twist of fate, Vinesh was disqualified on the morning of the final after she was found overweight by 100 grams. This unfortunate turn of events meant she had to return from Paris empty-handed. Jordan Burroughs, London Olympic and six-time World Champion stood in the favour of Vinesh and even tweeted “Give Vinesh Silver”.
Vinesh even appealed the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), hoping for a reversal. However, her appeal was dismissed, and the decision remained unchanged. Vinesh later joined Politics and contested the Haryana election for Congress party. She won the election from the Julana constituency and is now a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA).
Vinesh later announced her retirement from wrestling. She tweeted “Wrestling won against me, I lost. Forgive me, your dream, my courage is all broken, I don’t have any more strength now. Goodbye Wrestling 2001-2024. I will always be indebted to you all for forgiveness.”
Vinesh had an illustrious 13-year career. She had won two World Championship bronze medals, one gold and one bronze in the Asian Games, three Commonwealth Games and one gold, three silver and four bronze at the Asian Championships. She is arguably the best Indian female wrestler from India. Only an Olympic medal eluded her and she had that chance in Paris 2024, However, destiny had some other plans for Vinesh.
