Archery World Cup 2023 Stage 2: Archers who impressed the most
1. Prathamesh Samadhan Jawkar
Prathamesh Samadhan Jawkar was undoubtedly the best performer for India at Archery World Cup 2023 Stage 2 in Shanghai. In the final, he achieved a surprising victory over the World No. 1, Mike Schloesser, and secured the men's individual compound gold. Jawkar, 19, ranked 54th in the world, delivered a top-notch performance in the nail-biting final against the Dutch archer, winning by a narrow margin of 149-148.
The match started with Jawkar scoring a 9. However, he quickly made up for it, firing off 11 consecutive 10s, of which six were Xs or inner 10s. This put him neck-and-neck with Schloesser at 119-119 as they entered the last set of three shots. The match turned in the favor of Jawkar when Schloesser slipped with a 9 on his final arrow which allowed Jawkar to seize the opportunity and win his World Cup individual gold medal.
2. Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Ojas Pravin Deotale
The newly formed pair of Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Ojas Pravin Deotale bagged the gold medal in the mixed team event of the compound after stunning experienced Korean archers Kim Jongho and Oh Yoohyun in the finals. This was their second gold medal at the Archery World Cup 2023 having won the gold in the first stage of the World Cup which took place in Antalya, Turkey.
Jyothi/Ojas and the Korean duo both scored an impressive 39 out of 40 in the first three rounds. However, the Korean pair faltered in the last round which allowed Ojas and Jyothi to consistently notch another 39, earning them their second consecutive World Cup gold medals. With the score standing at 117-117 ahead of the last round, Jyothi hit a 10 with her concluding arrow, which eventually sealed the deal for India.
3. Avneet Kaur
In the women's compound category, the 18-year-old Avneet Kaur secured a bronze medal by defeating Ipek Tomruk of Turkey with a score of 147-144. Having finished ninth in the Archery World Cup Stage I, the young archer elevated her performance to claim a medal for her country this time around.
Shortly before her triumph in the bronze contest, she had suffered a defeat in the semi-finals to the seasoned archer Ella Gibson with a narrow scoreline of 146-144. However, Kaur didn’t let that loss affect her as she bounced back in the bronze medal match.
Archery World Cup 2023 Stage 2: Archers who disappointed
1. Atanu Das
Atanu Das was one of the archers who couldn’t live up to the expectations. The prominent Indian archer not only ranked outside of the top 40 during the ranking round (44) but also failed to move past the Round of 64 after he lost to Pablo Acha of Spain by 6-2 in the men’s individual recurve event.
2. Neeraj Chauhan
Neeraj Chauhan was another archer who delivered a sub-par performance at the Archery World Cup 2023 Stage 2 as he ended his campaign in the Round of 64, losing to Japanese archer Yuki Kawata by 6-2. However, Neeraj significantly bettered his ranking round performance when compared to his Stage 1 display where he finished on a disappointing 90th spot. He was ranked 47th in the Archery World Cup 2023 Stage 2 with a score of 638.
3. Tarundeep Rai
Veteran archer and three-time Olympian was the third archer from the recurve event who couldn’t produce a statement at the Archery World Cup 2023 Stage 2. He landed outside the top 50 in rankings as he was seeded 57th, barely making it among the 64 archers to qualify for the next round. He then exited from the individual event after his defeat against Korea’s Kim Je-deok in the Round of 64 itself.
With two gold and one bronze medal, Indian compound archers impressed everyone in the Archery World Cup 2023 Stage 2. On the other hand, India’s performance in the recurve archery was disappointing as no archers landed on the podium. The Indians would expect to do better in the next stage of the world cup, which will be staged in Medellín, Colombia from June 13 to June 18, 2023.
