Aditi Gopichand Swami also became the youngest world champion in the competition history.
India’s put up a spirited show in the recently concluded Archery World Championships 2023 by winning four medals overall (3 gold and 1 bronze). Until this edition, India had never won any gold medal at the Archery World Championships, but in the current edition alone, they have gone to win three gold medals. Young prodigy Aditi Swami stole the show by claiming two gold medals in individual and team events followed by legendary Jyothi Vennam, who won one bronze and gold each.
Jyothi, 27, until this edition had won six medals overall (6 silver and 2 bronze), but this time she broke the barrier by clinching a gold in the Compound women’s team event longside teammates Parneet Kaur and Aditi. In the Compound women’s individual category, Jyothi lost to compatriot Aditi in the semi-final, but came back strongly to claim bronze.
In the men’s section, Pravin Ojas Deotale was the lone medalist. He claimed an upset win over World No. 1 Mike Schloesser of Netherlands (149-148) in the semi-finals and then defeated Poland’s Lukasz Przybylski with a perfect score of 150 to the former’s 149 in the final.
The recurve section, on the other hand, did not enjoy much success with both men’s and women’s team losing in the quarter-finals. Dhiraj Bommadevara, who finished second after the end of the qualification round, exited in the quarter-finals with the other men archers not performing to the expectations in the individual category.
