Archery World Cup 2023 Stage 4: Indian men, women compound teams win gold

Jyothi Surekha Vennam capped off India’s campaign with a Compound individual bronze medal.
India’s compound archery teams continued from where it left behind last week at the World Archery Championships. The Indian men’s and women’s compound teams won gold medals by defeating the USA and Mexico respectively earlier today at Archery World Cup 2023 Stage IV.
The women’s team consisting of Parneet Kaur, Aditi Swami Gopichand and Jyothi Surekha Vennam started the day by bagging the gold medal after defeating third seed and WR-1 Mexico (234-233). The match started with a tie in the opening series (59-59). However, India went a step further to take a one-point lead in the following series.
Conditions towards the end of the finals wasn’t ideal with rain playing spoilsport but the players continued to move on. Despite all difficulties, Mexico bounced back to take the lead at the end of third series and were a point ahead heading into the final series. In the last series, India managed to stage a comeback scoring 59 while Mexico could muster only 57, thereby losing by a mere point.

After a short break, the men’s team were in action against second seed USA. The North American side started the match with a perfect score of 60 with India managing to score 59. However, the Indian trio – Abhishek Verma, Pravin Deotale and Prathamesh Jawkar came back to level scores in the second series (118-118) and the scores continued to remain tied in the penultimate series as well (176-176).
In the final series, India scored a perfect 60 to which the USA could score only 56, falling four points short. USA succumbed to pressure at the crucial juncture which helped the Indian team clinch consecutive gold for the day. Indian team also upgraded the bronze medal which they earned in the previous World Cup.
Later in the day, top seed Jyothi Surekha Vennam clinched bronze medal by defeating Sara Lopez (146-146), with her arrow closer to the X in the shoot off. Earlier, the World Championships bronze medallist lost to Ella Gibson by a close margin (148-150) in the semi-finals. Overall, India finished the campaign with five medals (2 gold and 3 bronze)
