This is India’s first-ever gold medal in the tournament history.

Indian women’s compound team consisting of Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Aditi Gopichand Swami, and Parneet Kaur clinched a historic and maiden gold medal for India by defeating top seeds Mexico (235-229) at the World Archery Championships 2023.

India started the final on a positive note by taking a crucial two-points lead at the end of series 1 (59-57). They continued to carry forward the momentum further into the match and did not trail once in the entire match. At the end of series two, India’s lead expanded to three and in the following series to five points (177-172).

Overall, India hit seven arrows closer to the inner circle (X) and on the contrary Mexico could muster only four. This is also India’s first medal in this edition of the World Championships after several archers failed to progress past the quarter-finals stage.

The women’s team in the qualification stages secured 2075 points (combining the scores of three archers) just seven points behind Mexico who took the top spot. By virtue of finishing in the top 8, India received a bye in the opening round and had easy outings throughout the tournament.

The addition of youngster Aditi Gopichand Swami, who has been in sublime form this season, was a major boost. History maker Jyothi Surekha Vennam, 27, as usual led the team from the front and secured her first gold medal at the Worlds.

Jyothi before the start of this edition had won four silver medals and two bronze medal at the World Championships and now has got the liberty of adding a gold medal to her cabinet.
