Deepika Kumari has also been also re-inducted into TOPS core group.

Deepika Kumari, the former world no. 1 recurve archer from India, has regained her status as the country’s top-ranked female archer after a stellar performance at the Archery World Cup Stage 1 event in Shanghai. The 29-year-old’s silver medal effort saw her jump an astonishing 100 places up the world rankings to No. 39.

In the women’s individual recurve final in Shanghai, Kumari faced off against world no. 2 Korean archer Lim Sih-yeon. Despite entering the match as the underdog 30th seed, Kumari battled valiantly but ultimately fell 0-6 (26-27, 27-29, 27-28) to the top-seeded Lim.

Kumari’s path to the silver medal match was an impressive one. She upset No. 6 qualifier Jeon Hunyoung of Korea in the quarterfinals before defeating Korean debutant Nam Suhyeon in the semifinals to set up the title clash with Lim.

The silver medal marked an impressive return to the international stage for Kumari, who missed national team selection in 2023 after becoming a mother late in 2022. Her early performances in Shanghai were underwhelming in the qualifying rounds and team events. However, she found her form in the individual event to claim the second step on the podium.

Following her success, India’s Mission Olympic Cell has decided to reinduct Kumari into the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) Core group, providing her with renewed training and support leading up to the 2024 Paris Olympics. Kumari had previously taken a maternity break before making her comeback, impressing at both the domestic level and the Asia Cup 2024 earlier this year.
