Deepika Kumari's Redemption Arc: Star Indian archer aims to complete story with Olympic medal

Deepika Kumari’s talent was undeniable, and success came swiftly.
For a young girl from a modest home in Ratu, Ranchi, the journey to becoming the world’s number one archer seemed like an impossible dream. Deepika Kumari grew up watching her father, an auto-rickshaw driver, work tirelessly to provide for their family. Her mother, a nurse, did her best to support them, but financial struggles were a constant reality.
Yet, Deepika’s story is not just about hardship—it is about unwavering determination, relentless hard work, and the unbreakable spirit of a girl who refused to be defined by her circumstances.

As a child, Deepika would craft bows and arrows out of bamboo, practicing archery with makeshift equipment because professional gear was beyond reach. But even with limited resources, her passion never wavered.
The turning point in his life came when he got a place at the state-run Tata Archery Academy, which provided free training and proper equipment to underprivileged athletes. This opportunity changed everything. It was here that she honed her skills and transformed into a force to be reckoned with on the archery field.

“Eighteen years ago, when I started, not many people knew about archery. But now, kids tell me they started learning archery after watching me. Seeing our sport grow gives me immense joy,” she shares.
Deepika’s talent was undeniable, and success came swiftly. In 2009, she won a gold medal at just 15 years of age in the World Youth Archery Championships, which marked the beginning of her stellar career. She rose to the number one archer in the world, winning gold medals in Commonwealth Games, World Cups, and other prestigious tournaments.
Her achievements earned her the Arjuna Award and the Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian awards. Deepika won a gold medal recently in the women’s recurve individual event at the National Games 2025, Uttarakhand, and thus further established her legacy in Indian archery.
Despite her success, Deepika remains hungry for more. “I have won medals in almost every championship, but an Olympic medal is still missing from my collection. It is one of the biggest honors in sports, and now my next goal is to achieve it. My game has improved significantly, but I still want to grow, especially mentally.”

Deepika’s journey has never been just about winning medals; it has been about breaking barriers. Coming from a family with no sporting background, she fought not only for opportunities but also against societal norms discouraging girls from pursuing sports professionally. Her story has inspired thousands of young girls across India, proving that dreams are valid regardless of one’s background.
In 2022, Deepika embraced a new role—that of a mother. Taking a break from the sport was not easy, but she faced it with the same determination that defined her career. “After delivery, the body doesn’t function the way you want it to. I returned to training immediately because I had to prepare for the Asian Games. I played the trial, and trust me, I cried. My mind was ready, but my body wasn’t responding. It took me five months just to do five proper sit-ups.”
Managing a newborn alongside training was another challenge, but she is grateful for the support she has received. “It’s difficult to care for a baby, leave them behind, and focus on practice. But I am lucky to have wonderful in-laws who take care of my child, allowing me to train without constant worry.”
Deepika is married to fellow Indian archer and Olympian Atanu Das, who has been a pillar of support in her journey. Together, they continue to inspire the next generation of athletes.
From practicing with bamboo bows to being celebrated as India’s best archer, Deepika’s journey has shown the path of extra-hard work and breaking barriers. They have not only rewritten their destiny but also paved the way for future generations. As she continues to aim for new heights, she remains an inspiration—a symbol of what is possible when passion meets perseverance.
