Chelsea legend John Terry to join Russian side Spartak Moscow

The former Blues captain has been a free agent since leaving Aston Villa in the summer.

Former Chelsea captain John Terry could join Russian heavyweights Spartak Moscow on a season-long deal with the otion of another year.

Terry underwent a medical for the Russian side in Rome on Saturday. The 37-year-old had been without a club since his contract ended with Aston Villa last season. The Steve Bruce managed side ended their campaign with a fourth-place finish and failed to enter the Premier League. Terry who featured 32 times for the Villans was a leader at the back for the club.

The Russian giants are currently in second place in the league behind rivals Zenit St. Petersburg. Spartak tweeted regarding the speculation of the defender joining them and released what looks to be a teaser of Terry's arrival. The tweet featured a group of people gathering at the club museum because of the arrival of a special guest.

The former Blues defender was all set to feature in a charity match at Celtic Park, but due to his medical, he called it off. Spartak will be the fourth club he will represent after featuring for Nottingham Forrest, Chelsea and Aston Villa. Terry came to Stamford Bridge when he was a teenager and leaving his short loan stint at Nottingham Forrest, he was a Blue by heart and soul, as he captained the side to five Premier League triumphs, along with the same number of FA Cups and also a Champions League title back in 2012.

The side is managed by Italian tactician Massimo Carrera who has worked under ex-Chelsea boss Antonio Conte at Juventus. Spartak finished their campaign with a third-place finish in the league and will find themselves playing in the Europa League this season. Terry may face international teammate Steven Gerrard's side as they are in the same group with sides like Villareal and Rapid Vienna.

Terry was also a prominent figure for England as he made 78 appearances for the Three Lions, but has not worn the England jersey since 2012. However, he was stripped of his captaincy when FA found him guilty of racially abusing QPR defender Anton Ferdinand. The defender has horrid memories of Moscow as he missed a penalty in the 2008 Champions League final against Manchester United.

In a recent interview, with the Daily Mail Terry said that he is hungry to play for more years and that becoming a Chelsea manager in the future will happen in his five to eight-year plan.
