En route to earning a record haul of trophies won at Barca, Lionel Messi appointed captain
The Newell's Old Boys youth player will be aiming to win the Spanish Supercopa fixture against Sevilla.
Lionel Messi has been appointed as the new Barcelona captain following the departure of Andres Iniesta from Camp Nou. The 31-year-old who is also the skipper of his country Argentina, will be taking over the reins from his La Masia teammate.
The Spanish international moved to Vissel Kobe at the end of the 2017-8 campaign. Messi has already led the Catalan side on quite a few occasions and will now lead the La Liga winners out on a permanent basis.
Defensive midfielder Sergio Busquets has taken over as vice-captain, meanwhile, Gerard Pique and Sergio Roberto will be third and fourth respectively in the hierarchy. This means that the top four in the hierarchy are from La Masia.

The Blaugrana will be facing Sevilla on 13th August 2018, for the Spanish Supercopa and their Argentine talisman will be aiming to win his first trophy as captain and overtake Iniesta in terms of having won the most trophies as a Barcelona player. The academy products have both won 32 trophies each at club level. So, if the five-time Ballon d'Or winner wins the upcoming fixture, he will take a step ahead of his former teammate in the trophy cabinet.
