The inaugural edition of the tournament saw it fail to attract intest from most ISL teams.

A meeting of the All India Football Federation’s League Committee was held on Wednesday in Delhi to discuss the future of the Super Cup, which is a competition involving teams from both the I-League and the ISL.

The first edition of the competition failed to live up to expectations as many key players were missing from the participating sides, taking away from the spectacle. The members of the League Committee have admitted that the concept of the Super Cup is in need of revision. More than half the competing ISL teams came into the competition without their full quota of foreigners.

"We discussed about the Super Cup and we have spoken at length about it. Some of the ISL teams were not serious about it. But some I-League teams took it as a challenge. We have not reached a decision, but we agreed that there must be a review of the viability of the Super Cup. Is the time and money spent on the tournament worth it? The champions of the Super Cup have no value as they do not get any continental spot. So, it needs to be reviewed," said a top-ranking official to Goal on condition of anonymity.

"Even the Federation Cup winners were entitled to a spot in the AFC Cup which made sense. A tournament does not make sense just because the I-League and ISL clubs wanted to participate on the same platform. It did not happen during the course of the season. It happened at the end of the season. There is a risk of players getting injured. The foreigners are itching to go home. The Super Cup must be reviewed," said the official.

The Super Cup has also been slammed by the managers of the ISL teams, with the newly-appointed ATK boss Steve Coppell calling it a nonsense trophy. Coppell is not the only one with derision for the competition, with a widespread lack of motivation to fight for the title, as it does not hold enough of an incentive for the winners.

As it stands, a decision is yet to be reached. However, it is looking increasingly likely that the future of the Super Cup is in danger.
