India won 6 medals on day 2, 25th September to add to its tally in Asian Games 2023.

Indian athletes displayed brilliance in various disciplines, including rowing, shooting, cricket, swimming, tennis, artistic gymnastics, wushu, boxing, 3X3 basketball, and chess on day 2 (September 25) of the Asian Games 2023.

However, the events where Indian athletes shone the brightest were in shooting, rowing, and cricket. The day unfolded remarkably for Indian sports fans as they witnessed the country both open the day and conclude it with gold medals.

The Indian men’s 10m Air Rifle team shattered the World Record on their way to the top of the podium. Meanwhile, on their debut appearance at the Asian Games 2023, the women’s cricket team claimed the gold medal, living up to the reputation.

Number of medals presented to Indian athletes on 25th September

India added six medals to take their total count to 11, after acquiring five medals on day 1 (September 24) of the Asian Games 2023. Indian rowers continued to excel as they managed to grab a podium finish in two of the four finals, they participated in. The men’s four team of Jaswinder Singh, Bheem Singh, Punit Kumar, and Ashish won bronze with a time of 6:10.81.

The second and last medal in rowing came in Men’s Quadruple Sculls where India once again bagged the bronze. The team, consisting of Satnam Singh, Parminder Singh, Jakar Khan, and Sukhmeet Singh, finished third with a time of 6:08.61. Having won two silver and three bronze at the Asian Games 2023, the Indian rowing contingent equaled their best-ever medal tally from the 2010 edition, where they had also won five medals.

Earlier in the day, the shooting trio of Rudrankksh Patil, Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar, and Divyansh Singh Panwar, earned India’s first gold medal in the 19th edition of the continental showpiece. They accomplished the incredible feat by breaking the World record, with a combined total of 1893.7, in the men’s 10m Air Rifle team event.

Later, Aishwary, with a score of 228.8, went on to clinch the bronze in the individual event of the 10m Air Rifle, defeating Rudrankksh, who finished fourth, in the eight-man final. India achieved its third medal in shooting on day 2, in the men’s 25m Rapid Fire Pistol team event, where the trio of Vijayveer Sidhu, Anish Bhanwala, and Adarsh Singh scored 1718 overall, to win bronze.

In a thrilling final, the Indian women’s cricket team defeated Sri Lanka to claim the nation’s second gold medal in Hangzhou. A stellar 73-run partnership between Smriti Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues and Titas Sadhu’s exceptional spell, in which she picked three wickets for just six runs, ensured India’s triumph with a margin of 19 runs.

At the end of Day 2 of the Asian Games 2023, India are placed sixth on the medal table, with two gold, three silver, and six bronze medals. With 69 medals, including 39 gold, 21 silver, and 9 bronze, hosts China are way ahead of the second and third-placed South Korea (33) and Japan (31) in the medal tally. Uzbekistan and Hong Kong, with 14 medals combined, continue to remain above India in the Asian Games 2023.

Chinese Taipei (6), Indonesia (6), Thailand (3) and Macao, China (2) complete the top 10 in the medals tally.

What to expect from Indian contingent on September 25?

India have set their sights on surpassing their previous best medal tally of 70 medals achieved in the 2018 edition in Jakarta, Indonesia. At the 2018 Asian Games, India secured a commendable eighth position, bagging an impressive tally of 70 medals. This comprised 16 gold, 23 silver, and 31 bronze medal finishes.

They have now set foot in Hangzhou for Asian Games 2023 with an aim of achieving at least 100 overall medals. On Tuesday (September 25), the 10m Air Rifle mixed team of Divyansh Singh Panwar and Ramita will look to qualify for the final and contend in the medal event. Bhavani Devi will also begin her campaign in the Asian Games.
