The Asian Games 2026 are officially underway, and India will step into it right away, with their first piece of action on the opening day being a medal event.
India, which achieved its best-ever medal haul at the Asiad three years ago in Hangzhou, will compete for medals in as many as three events on Sunday, while swimming could join the party later (subject to qualification).

To start, Suraj Singh Mayanglambam will have to play out of his skin to stand any chance of winning a medal against heavyweights like China and Hong Kong in the wushu men’s changquan final.

Elsewhere, though, Quimcy Dsouza will be a favourite to clinch bronze in the women’s singles event in debutant sport teqball.
Quimcy, who stunned the top seed in the opening round, will contest for a bronze against Japan’s Yuina Sakamoto. She will contend for bronze in the teqball mixed doubles event alongside Mohammad Anas Abeg.
Shooting action will also commence on Sunday, and in action for India is the troika of Elavenil Valarivan, Soman Maskar and Vidarsa Vinod. They will look to clinch both the individual and team medals.

Kicking things off are also hockey, badminton and table tennis on Sunday, with both the men’s and women’s hockey teams in action in the pool stage. Meanwhile, the Indian women’s badminton team will open their campaign today against Kazakhstan.
The Indian women’s cricket team will also be in action and they will look to take another step closer to defending their gold medal, whey they clash against Bangladesh in the semi-finals.

India’s day on Sunday will begin with the medal event in Wushu. Suraj Singh Mayanglambam will represent the country in the wushu men’s changquan final.
