India has been part of the Asian Games since the very first edition back in 1951, and over the decades, the country has built up a huge medal history, 779 medals in total, including 183 gold, 239 silver, and 357 bronze.
With the 2026 games now underway in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, a lot of fans have been curious about where India actually stands when it comes to its best-ever position on the medal table. And interestingly, the answer isn’t as simple as picking the year with the most medals.

If we’re talking about India’s highest finish, meaning its best rank on the overall medal table, that record actually goes all the way back to 1951, the very first Asian Games, which India hosted in New Delhi.
India finished second overall that year, behind only Japan, winning 51 medals in total: 15 gold, 16 silver, and 20 bronze. Japan topped the table with 60 medals. To this day, that second-place finish remains India’s best-ever rank at the Asian Games.

A lot of firsts happened that year too. Swimmer Sachin Nag won India’s first-ever Asian Games gold medal in the men’s 100m freestyle, while Kanti Shah picked up India’s first-ever medal overall with a silver in the 100m backstroke.
Roshan Mistry became the first Indian woman to win a medal, taking silver in the women’s 100m sprint. The Indian football team also won gold that year, beating Iran 1-0 in the final.
It’s also worth noting that 1951 remains the only edition where India has won gold medals in diving, swimming, and water polo, and the only edition where India has won any medal at all in cycling.
It’s important to separate this from India’s highest medal count, which is a different record altogether. That one belongs to Hangzhou 2023, where India won a massive 107 medals, 28 gold, 38 silver, and 41 bronze, its best haul by number.

But despite that record medal count, India only finished fourth on the table that year. So while 2023 gave India more medals than any other year, 1951 still holds the record for India’s best position on the table.

India has also won a gold medal at every single edition of the Games so far and remains the most dominant kabaddi nation, winning eight out of nine editions since the sport was introduced in 1990.
