Quimcy Dsouza led 7-2 in the decider before Indonesia’s Sumaya pulled things back
India’s bid for a gold medal in Teqball ended with Quimcy Dsouza losing in the semi-finals of the women’s singles event at Asian Games 2026. However, she still has a chance to bring home a medal, as she will play in the bronze medal match on Sunday.
Quimcy, by virtue of winning all the games in the group stage, qualified directly for the semi-finals. In the battle for a place in the final, the 24-year-old faced Sumaya of Indonesia.
It was a match worthy of a semi-final, with both players playing without giving an inch and Sumaya getting the better of her Indian counterpart.
The 24-year-old Indian made an impressive start to the semis, scoring at a brisk pace. She started brilliantly to lead 5-1 and quickly raced to 8-2. Sumaya tried her best to make a comeback, only to lose the first set 12-7.
The Indonesian kept the momentum in the second set as the contest was tight. With scores hovering around 6-6 and 8-8, it was a close game. A couple of aggressive kicks meant that Sumaya won the second set 9-12, taking the match to the decider.

The final set was full of action, with Quimcy dominating at the start to take the score to 7-2. Everyone thought it was India’s game, but just as every sport has its ebbs and flows, Sumaya started scoring point by point. She scored nine consecutive points to secure a place in the finals.
Quimcy still has a chance to be on the podium, as she will be playing the bronze medal match against Japan’s Yuina Sakamoto. Interestingly, Yuina was top-seeded in the event, and Quimcy registered a come-from-behind victory in the league stage.

The women’s singles bronze medal match is not the only medal match for India. Teqball is one of the six sports to make its debut in the Asian Games, and India will be competing in the bronze medal match for the mixed doubles on Sunday. Quimcy will pair with Mohammad Anas to take on a Vietnamese pair for the medal match.
That was the only game for India for the day, as it also witnessed the opening ceremony at the Paloma Mizuho Stadium in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.
Kabaddi ace Pawan Sehrawat and two-time Olympic medalists Manu Bhaker were the flag bearers. Starting from Sunday, India will have multiple medal contests as they aim to break the record of 106 medals they won in the last edition.
