Asian Games 2026 Day 6 Results: India win first shooting gold, historic medals in pole vault and air pistol

India climbed to 12th place in the medal tally after Day 6 action, with 22 medals

India won their first gold in shooting at the Asian Games 2026, with the unexpected pair of Kamaljeet and Suruchi Singh breaking records to ensure India’s national anthem is played at the Aichi Prefectural General Shooting Gallery in Aichi Prefecture, Japan.

The pair was described as unexpected because they were not initially planned to pair up for the event. But Indian shooting coach Samaresh Jung asked Kamaljeet to pair with Suruchi, and the duo first equalled the Asian Record for qualification (587 points) and then broke the Asian Games record in the final (484.6 points) to take home the gold.

The Indian shooting contingent would be relieved to see gold after a disappointing show in the first five days. With a few more events to come, Indian shooters would draw inspiration from this to get more golds.

One man who could be an inspiration to the entire Indian contingent is Gulveer Singh, who won silver in the men’s 10,000m finals.

It was a tough race with two Bahrain runners strategically running not to cross him. But Gulveer, who won silver in CWG 2026, was determined to win the same as he ran the last 400m extremely well to finish in second place.

Vishal Thennarasu also accelerated well in the last 50m to finish first in the heats and qualify for the finals of the men’s 400m.

The Tamil Nadu-runner had won silver in the mixed team 4x400m relay on Thursday. Another Tamil Nadu athlete, Baranica Elangovan created history by winning India’s first-ever medal in pole vault.

With a jump of 4.15m, she won bronze in the event. Manpreet Kaur also won bronze in the women’s shot put event with a throw of 17.17m.

India also won a silver in the Men’s 50m Rifle 3 Positions team event. Aishwary Pratap Tomar Singh and Niraj Kumar made it to the finals of the individual event, but they failed to win a medal. The Indian hockey team continued their winning run, beating Japan 3-1 in the women’s group match.

Earlier in the day, the men’s and women’s Kabaddi teams made it to the finals with easy wins and will be facing Iran in the finals. India and Iran have faced each other in the league stage in the women’s event, where India won the game. The men’s final will be the game to watch out for with multiple stars present in the game.

The day also presented its disappointment with defending champions in men’s doubles Chirag Shetty & Satwiksairaj Rankireddy being knocked out in the first round in badminton. They won the first set 21-12. But they lost the next two against Pakkapon Theeratsakul/Peeratchai Sukphun of Thailand to rob a potential gold medal for India.

Positive results for India in the mixed doubles and women’s doubles events in badminton. Mixed results in boxing as well, with Sachin winning his round of 32 game in men’s 60 kg but Preeti Pawar lost her round of 16 game in women’s 54 kg category. A similar story followed in squash with Veer Chotrani losing his quarterfinal match.

Anahat Singh, Abhay Singh, and the pair of Joshana Chinappa/Velavan Senthilkumar won their quarterfinals in the women’s singles, men’s singles, and mixed doubles events. While three bronze medals have been assured, Indians will have to go for gold if they would want to match their overall tally of 28 gold from the 2022 Asian Games.

Manush Shah and Diya Chitale had to settle for a bronze in the mixed doubles table tennis event. India’s challenge in the doubles event came to an end on Friday. Manush Shah (men’s singles) and Yashaswini Ghorpade (women’s singles) are the Indians still in the fray, and they would be hopeful to see them on the podium.

Canoe sprint, fencing, swimming, and esports saw Indians compete but couldn’t possess a strong challenge. A good start in surfing in shortboard events. India would be hoping to continue their good run. Nirupama Devi Seram finished 6th place in the women’s 61kg weightlifting event.
