Federation Cup Athletics 2023: Rohit Yadav wins gold in javelin, Jyothi Yarraji tops women's 200m

National Record holder Jyothi Yarraji bagged her second gold medal of the meet.

The final day of the 26th National Federation Cup Senior Athletics Championships finished on a bright note with several players breaching the Asian Athletics Championships mark set by AFI (Athletics Federation of India). Gulveer Singh from Uttar Pradesh started the day's proceeding by winning the gold medal in men's 5000m clocking (13:54.41) and in the process surpassed the Asian Championships mark. Including Gulveer, five other long-distance runners too have breached the mark for the Asian meet.

In the men's 400m hurdles, Yashas (49.40) and Santhosh (49.51) from Karnataka and Tamil Nadu finished in the top two spots and eclipsed the Asian Athletics Championship qualification mark. On the other hand, Vithya Ramaraj was the lone female hurdler to cross the Asian mark clocking 57.51 sec.

Tamil Nadu swept the podium in the women's pole vault with Rosy Meena, Pavitra, and Baranica winning the gold, silver, and bronze medals respectively. The Asian mark was set at 4.10m but none of them could breach the coveted mark.

Rohit Yadav from Uttar Pradesh clocked his Personal Best mark spearing the Javelin to 83.40m. He was closely followed by Manu DP (82.95m) and statemate Sachin Yadav (80.27m). All three youngsters thereby surpassed the Asian mark (78.23m). Gold medallist Rohit Yadav remained consistent with five of his six throws crossing the 80m mark.

In women's 800m, Chanda, 22, broke the seven-year-old meet record set by Tintu Luka clocking 02:01.79 and in the process also qualified for the Asian meet along with four more athletes. National Record holder Jyothi Yarraji won her second gold medal of the meet in women's 200m clocking 23.42 sec and is the only athlete to qualify for the Asiad.
