World Athletics Championships 2023: Jeswin Aldrin finishes 11th in long jump final
Fellow Indian athlete Ram Baboo finished 27th in 35km race walk event.
India’s disappointing run in the ongoing World Athletics Championships 2023 continued as National Record holders Jeswin Aldrin (Long Jump) and Ram Baboo (Race Walking) exited the competition. Jeswin, who held the world lead in men’s long jump, finished a disappointing 11th with just one legal jump while Ram Babu clocked 2:39.07 seconds in 35km race walk to end 27th among 47th competitors.
Following a series of disheartening performances, Aldrin finally achieved a breakthrough by becoming the first Indian to reach the final in Budapest. His accomplishment came with an impressive initial jump of 8 meters which secured him a 12th place finish in the qualification round.
In the final, Aldrin’s first jump resulted in a no jump which was indicated by a cross next to his name. In his second attempt, Jeswin Aldrin once again made an illegal jump keeping him at the bottom of the 12 jumpers.
During his third jump, Jeswin successfully received a green flag which indicated a legal jump. However, he needed to surpass 7.94 meters to remain in the competition but unfortunately, he landed at 7.77 meters. Regrettably, this distance was insufficient to maintain his position in the competition.
Jeswin Aldrin’s performance was below the anticipated level. He was required to secure a place within the top eight after the initial three jumps. The Indian long jumper’s debut campaign has ended in the 11th position in the world athletics championships.
Along with Jeswin Aldrin, fellow Indian athlete Ram Baboo, competing in men’s 35km race walk, was in action on day six of the World Athletics Championships 2023 in Budapest, Hungary.
India pinned its hopes on Ram Baboo, who had broken the national record at the National Games in 2022. Ram Baboo concluded the men’s 35km race walk in the 27th position with a time of 2:39:07s.
